Word up for Henry Rollins

Singer and songwriter, spoken word artist, author, actor, and publisher Henry Rollins is to film a special in Melbourne for the Movie Extra Channel.

It will form part of a Rollins season on the pay TV channel in which he also interviews cult film director John Waters, Gene Simmons, Steve Buscemi and William Shatner. Quite a line up!

Movie Extra has previously brought Rollins to Australia to promote his first spoken word series.

The Melbourne show will screen on May 23.

Press Release:

MOVIE EXTRA is proud to announce that it will produce a 90-minute special of Henry Rollins’ latest spoken word show, to be filmed in Melbourne during his Australian tour this month. The special will be screened on EXTRA in May, along with specials filmed live in New York and Israel.

Provocateur, post-punk Renaissance man and downright funny guy: HENRY ROLLINS will touched down in Australia yesterday for his latest spoken-word tour, PROVOKED: AN EVENING OF QUINTESSENTIALLY AMERICAN OPINIONATED EDITORIALIZING AND STORYTELLING, which kicks off around the country this week covering Brisbane, Perth, Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

MOVIE EXTRA will be on board to film his Melbourne show, continuing a relationship that was first established last year when EXTRA brought his talk show, THE HENRY ROLLINS SHOW, to Australian television audiences.

Henry last performed his popular spoken-word here in January 2006 as part of the travelling Big Day Out circus - the first performer to appear on the BDO in such a capacity – and he enthralled thousands as only Henry can with his ballsy brand of truth, justice and humour.

MOVIE EXTRA then brought Henry back to Australia in February 2007 to launch THE HENRY ROLLINS SHOW – an independent alternative to the standard talk show fare – and it has since enjoyed a cult following on EXTRA. Two seasons in, Henry has interviewed film directors like Oliver Stone and John Waters; actors such as Samuel L Jackson and Ben Stiller; and a myriad of interesting figures from the realms of music, politics and more. www.movieextra.com.au/henryrollins

In May, MOVIE EXTRA will telecast three of Henry’s spoken-word shows, including the EXTRA-produced Melbourne performance.

To film the Melbourne show, MOVIE EXTRA has secured Director of Photography Cameron Barnett from PVC Live, whose impressive experience includes the filming of live performances for artists such as The Rolling Stones, Madonna and Christina Aguilera.

The spoken-word specials to be screened on MOVIE EXTRA in May are:

HENRY ROLLINS: UNCUT FROM NYC – Premieres Friday 9th May at 10:00pm on MOVIE EXTRA

In this entertaining uncut performance recorded live in NYC, the post-punk Renaissance man waxes lyrical about everything from politics to music, what it would be like to be gay for a week, and even Wal-Mart fashion!

HENRY ROLLINS: UNCUT FROM ISRAEL - Premieres Friday 16th May at 10:00pm on MOVIE EXTRA

Recorded live in Israel, Rollins surfs subjects ranging from politics to being ready to wander into traffic after meeting James Brown - as well as delivering unexpected bits about himself…like how these days, he gets more hummus than sex!

HENRY ROLLINS: LIVE FROM MELBOURNE - Premieres Friday 23rd May at 10:00pm on MOVIE EXTRA

Recorded live in Melbourne for MOVIE EXTRA, Henry’s back with a brand new spoken-word tour spanning culture, politics, and more - delivered especially for his Aussie fans!

Jackie O, prison pin up girl.

Roberta Williams, divorced wife of Carl Williams (both of whom are portrayed in Underbelly) had a chat with radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O.

Questioned by Jackie O, Williams again made sure her feelings were known about the performance of actress Kat Stewart (emphasis on actress). She actually likened her to Kath Day Knight...

What was most interesting in the interview, however, was that Carl Williams is a fan of Jackie O. And she was very gracious in reply. Should it be mentioned here that he is a convicted murderer?

Here's a little snippet of the chat....

Jackie: What do you think of the guy who plays Carl, is that accurate?

Roberta: Oh, he is a moron. Carl is certainly not like that.

Jackie O: Cos he portrays Carl as a bit of a dope...

Roberta: A dickhead.

Kyle: What's Carl really like? We've only seen bits on the news. What's Carl like as a husband?

Roberta: Carl’s great, he’s a really great, fun person and we had a really great friendship, Carl and I. And, Jackie, let me tell you too, when Carl rang me he said to ask you if you can send him a signed photograph because he loves you and thinks you’re gorgeous!

Jackie: That’s nice, I definitely will!

Kyle: Roberta, did Carl say anything about me?

Roberta: Carl said, ‘Roberta, don’t let Kyle get too cocky and go up there and slap him around a bit if he does!’

Jackie: How often do you see or talk to Carl?

Roberta: Carl has twenty five maximum calls per week, that’s all he’s allowed.

Kyle also fished for an interview with Carl Williams.

Kyle: If he’s got twenty five calls, why can’t he call us one morning? Can he talk to the media?

Roberta: No, he’s not allowed because they’ll take his calls.

Kyle: God, don’t do that, I don’t want to be responsible for him losing his privileges!

Roberta: Then he’ll really slap you around, Kyle!

No bingo scandal with Power contestants

There's no chance of a repeat "scandal" with the axing of Power of Ten on Channel Nine.

A Nine spokesperson has confirmed to TV Tonight that all contestants on the game show will receive their prize money.

Last month A Current Affair aired two segments crying foul over the Seven Network not paying some of its National Bingo Night contestants. With their episodes not airing, Nine championed the cause of several angry contestants, who fell prey to a standard game show contract clause that stipulates if the episode doesn't air prize winnings are not due. Reporter Ben McCormack even harangued Mel and Kochie outside the Sunrise studio.

So when Power of Ten was pulled yesterday by Nine, naturally one of the first questions is whether Nine will pay up.

Knowing it would be the target of a payback story, and wanting to avoid cries of hypocrisy, Nine says the contestants will all be paid. Now it is a question of when. The network will need to reschedule these eps fast to avoid dragging this out.

Spoiler: Most of the contestants on Power of Ten have walked away with paltry sums of $100 (part of the problem with the format). But it's good news for at least one contestant in the third ep, who made it all the way to the $100,000 question. But erring on the side of caution she decided to decline the question and settled on the $10,000 cash. She should now be thanking A Current Affair. If it wasn't for their Bingo story, she might never have wound up getting her money.

Michael Johns and the chihuahuas

29yo Michael Johns sang Aerosmith's "Dream On" on today's American Idol, rockin' complete with his falsetto vocal range. Johns said the song represented his living a dream right now.

This week the judges were mixed. Randy said: "Pretty good song choice, it had some pitch problems.... I don't buy you as an Aerosmith singer.....with all the songs to choose, you can do whatever you want... this show is about being the best singer... not about Dreams."

Paula: "I couldn't disagree more. I think it was the perfect song to sing. You sound as good as you look... the high notes I think my chihuahuas are gonna come join you on stage...you were unbelievable "

Simon: "A very good performance, why I am slightly with Randy on this...I don't like it when you do an imprersonation of a rock star. I prefer the blues R&B; thing.. a little bit wanna-beish."

American Idol airs tonight on FOX8 at 7:30pm.

Police investigate 60 Minutes couple

South Australian police are investigating alleged payment for an interview with a father and daughter convicted of incest.

60 Minutes aired a story on Sunday about John Deaves, 61, and his daughter, Jennifer Deaves, 39, spoke of their unusual relationship and pleaded for understanding. The two had previously appeared in the South Australian edition of Today Tonight.

The pair were convicted in the South Australian District Court in Mount Gambier last month of two counts each of incest relating to the conception of their daughter, Celeste, born last year, and another baby who died in 2001, a few days after birth, from a congenital heart defect. 60 Minutes neglected to acknowledge the death of the earlier baby.

Under Australian law, convicted criminals cannot profit directly from their crimes.

Hamish Thomson, the executive producer of 60 Minutes, was quoted in News Ltd publications yesterday confirming that money was offered to the couple.

"We bought them some clothes and they might have to move town and we have offered to give them some money to cover the costs of their move, if that happens," he was quoted as saying.

A South Australia Police spokesman said officers from the south-east district, which encompasses Mount Gambier, were looking into the case.

"The matter is being investigated but police are not commenting on it," said a South Australia Police spokesman.

The story has also made international news.

Returning: Big Love

That tense, complex and acclaimed HBO series Big Love is returning with a new series next month.

SBS will launch the second season at 8:30pm Saturday May 10. It will follow the first series currently airing in repeat.

In the second season, the Henrickson family deals with being exposed as polygamists, with cult leader Roman being revealed to be the one behind their public unmasking. It aired in the US last June.

The Mormon drama, starring Bill Paxton, Chloe Sevigny, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Ginnifer Goodwin has also been renewed for a third series.

Often an unsettling piece of television, the show was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Drama last year. Certainly a great alternative to the light Saturday entertainment on commercial networks. God only knows....
