FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. How do you go about adding a name to the Memorial Wall?

    (See Criteria for Adding New Names to Memorial for definition of a line of duty death).

    Once our organization is notified of an officer's death, a data form is sent to the head of agency for completion. The head of agency is not required to fill out the form, but he/she is required to sign it. Data forms for recent deaths are received until December 31st, which is the deadline if the officer is to be added to the wall the following May. However, the deadline for older deaths is June 30th due to the backlog and the extensive research often required.

    The data forms are then prepared for our names committee who meet every year during the month of February. Consisting of NLEOMF board members, they review the incidents of each officer's death to make sure they meet the criteria of a line of duty death. After the meeting, the departments and any survivors receive notification of the officer's approval. This process takes at least two to four weeks.

    Once approved, names are placed in random order on the Memorial wall, and the name the department wrote up in the data form will be used.

  2. What and when are the activities for Police Week?

    National Police Week is always the calendar week in which May 15th, National Peace Officers Memorial Day, falls. The Annual Candlelight Vigil is held on May 13th each year. Sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), the Vigil begins at 8:00 p.m. at the Memorial grounds, located at Judiciary Square, on the 400 block of E Street, NW, Washington, DC. A reading of the names newly engraved on the Memorial immediately follows the ceremony. Everyone is welcome to attend; no tickets are required. The National Peace Officers Memorial Day Service, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police and the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary, is held on May 15th.

  3. What is Peace Officers Memorial Day?

    The President is requested to issue each year a proclamation—
      (1) designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of Federal, State, and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty;
      (2) directing United States Government officials to display the flag of the United States at halfstaff on all Government buildings on Peace Officers Memorial Day, as provided by section 7 (m) of title 4, United States Code; and
