Safety Education



All-Terrain Vehicle Education Iowa All-Terrain Vehicle Education
This is a mandatory program for individuals ages 12-17 who ride their ATV's on public land or land purchased with ATV registration funds in Iowa. It is a cooperative program between the Iowa DNR and the ATV Safety Institute, a non-profit division of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America.


Boating Education Boating Safety/Education
An owner or operator shall not permit any person under twelve years of age to operate the personal watercraft unless accompanied in or on the same personal watercraft by a responsible person of at least eighteen years of age. However, commencing January 1, 2003, a person who is twelve years of age or older but less than eighteen years of age shall not operate any personal watercraft unless the person has successfully completed a department-approved watercraft safety course.


Bow Hunter Education Iowa Bow Hunter Education
The Department of Natural Resources encourages bowhunters to enroll in this course, especially first time hunters. The bow hunter program is designed to teach bowhunters safe and ethical hunting techniques and to install responsible attitudes toward people, wildlife and the environment.


Fur Harvesting Education Iowa Fur Harvesting Education
This is a non-mandatory eight hour course requiring students to obtain a minimum score of 80% on the examination to be certified. It is also given as a home study course.


Hunter Education Iowa Hunter Education Training
Hunter education is a mandatory program that is designed to introduce students to several life-long skills that are important to the many different types of outdoor recreational opportunities. The course teaches students basic survival and first aid skills, water safety, wildlife identification, and the basics of wildlife management, hunting laws, and firearm/archery safety.


Snowmobile Education Iowa Snowmobile Education Training
This snowmobile education program is mandatory for students 12-17 years of age who wish to operate unsupervised on public property or areas purchased with snowmobile registration funds. The Iowa snowmobile education course is designed to teach students the principles of safe snowmobiling and how snowmobiling affects other people and the environment.
