Student Publications

The Beacon is Shipley's student newspaper, with either 2 or 3 editors-in chief appointed each year, a contributing staff of 30 and 40 students, and one faculty advisor. The inaugural issue was published October 3, 1955. Between six and seven issues are published annually, with topics ranging from student life, politics, topical issues, and entertainment, to sports and featured students.

The Beacon is a 11 x 17 tabloid publication, produced with the latest in technology at the professional level, both software and hardware. Most photos are taken with either a digital camera or a 35mm single reflex camera and are scanned into the software professional layout program, QuarkXpress 4.0 on a Windows format. All photos are adjusted in Adobe Photoshop 5.5. The finished document is saved to a Zip disk and sent to a commercial printer to produce the finished paper.

The Compass
New Design, Earlier Publication Date

The Compass is the Shipley Upper School literary and visual art publication, published annually in the spring. It is compiled by a student editorial board, working with three faculty advisors, and includes literary and art works by Upper School students, freshmen through seniors. The works are generally produced in Shipley art or English classes. The written pieces are comparatively short, including poems, personal essays, and fiction. The art works include drawings, prints, photographs, and photographs of three-dimensional works.
