Group wants Ravenel off board

A group of about 30 community members led by the NAACP called Friday for the resignation of Charleston County School Board member Arthur Ravenel Jr. They plan to ask Gov. Mark Sanford to suspend Ravenel from his seat on the board after Ravenel first denied, but later admitted, to using the word 'bitch' in reference to schools Superintendent Nancy McGinley.

Nash bashes 'outrageous' ruling

SUMMERVILLE — A day after a magistrate threw out a DUI case against state Sen. Randy Scott, Dorchester County Sheriff Ray Nash called the ruling "outrageous" and defended the arrest video that led Magistrate Phillip Newsome to dismiss the case. On Friday, Nash and 7th Circuit Deputy Solicitor Barry Barnette played the segment of video that Newsome said was missing a minute and 10 seconds of audio.

Scana wants 37% more

South Carolina Electric & Gas customers are set to learn just how expensive it is to go nuclear. Scana Corp., SCE&G;'s parent, said Friday it will need to raise its electric rates 37 percent over 11 years to pay for two new nuclear units it is proposing to build in the Midlands with Santee Cooper.

Swede, Hall of Famer lead Ginn Tribute

MOUNT PLEASANT — There's a Swedish golfer and a Hall of Fame golfer at the top of the leaderboard at RiverTowne Country Club midway through the 2008 Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika. But that combination isn't tournament hostess Annika Sorenstam, who despite a second-round 66, is neither the low Swede nor low Hall of Famer. Sorenstam is seven shots behind fellow Swede Sophie Gustafson and fellow Hall of Famer Karrie Webb, who share first at 13-under-par 131.

High Profile: BARRY GOLDSMITH

While chaperoning a group of Wando High School students, Barry Goldsmith strolled down Broadway after seeing the musical "Chicago" and heard strains of "Razzle Dazzle" robustly ringing out behind him. "When we turned around, we saw 15 girls from Wando, singing and dancing the song from the show under the lights of Times Square," Goldsmith recalls about the trip a few years ago.

North Charleston firefighters scramble to save townhouses
North Charleston fire vehicles flooded the Oak Ridge Estates subdivision after neighbors called in a fire at a townhouse complex Friday. The blaze, which started when a dishwasher caught fire, heavily damaged two units at the Oak Ridge Townhouses on 4224 Bonaparte Drive, Battalion Chief Eric Phillips said. Nobody was in the damaged buildings at the time and no injuries were reported.
