Sirengate
ImageDrama unfolded at Aurora Stadium in Round 5 2006 between St Kilda and Fremantle with what has been now been referred to as Sirengate. As the central field umpire failed to hear the siren, play continued to allow St Kilda to score a behind and draw the game. The AFL conducted an investigation and made history in overturning the result and giving the points to Fremantle. Although not all the ensuing publicity was necessarily positive, Aurora calculated that if they had to purchase the exposure gained as a result of Sirengate, it would have cost almost $2million. Further to this the match was the 6th highest watched home and away match in season ‘06 peaking at 1.140million viewers. Aurora Stadium ended with a new siren and a relocated position for the timekeepers. The quiet siren (pictured above) will be on display in the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery at some stage in the future.
