The cost of air travel has been rocketing in recent months, as rising fuel prices have left airlines with little choice but to pass on their soaring costs to consumers. Unfortunately, however, when it comes to extracting additional cash from their customers, the airlines have taken a leaf out of the banks' book – preferring to add on additional charges rather than simply putting up the price of the headline fare. This month, for example, United Airlines became the latest to start charging customers who want to check in more than one piece of baggage when they fly, while fees for paying by credit card or for not checking in online are now also becoming commonplace among other airlines.

The popping of champagne corks on Thursday – when the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) won its court case against the banks – was more than a little premature. While the result does, indeed, open the door for an OFT clampdown on bank charges, it is improbable that anything will happen in 2008, and there is no guarantee that there will be a resolution even before the end of 2009.
