Photos: Arcade Fire / Superchunk at Rally for Obama [Carrboro, NC; 05/02/08]

Photos by Will Marsh

The Arcade Fire and Superchunk kept the car running after Thursday's big Barack Obama rally in Greensboro, North Carolina and rolled right into nearby Carrboro's Town Commons yesterday afternoon for round two. The state's Obama faithful, who'll cast their votes in the NC Democratic primary on May 6, were treated to yet another rousing Arcade Fire cover of David Bowie's "Heroes", all manner of on- and off-stage acrobatics, and even a cameo from some adorable youngsters during Superchunk's set. "This is the future of America!" the band proclaimed. It's a shame they can't vote.

The Cool Kids' Bake Sale EP, Here at Last
Album title: When Fish Ride Bicycles

We've anticipated the release of the Cool Kids' debut EP, The Bake Sale, for some time, but now that they have the backing of new label Chocolate Industries, Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks are ready to make good on its arrival.

The 10-track EP is scheduled to hit iTunes on May 20, followed by a June 10 release to brick-and-mortar stores and other digital retailers. A new mixtape, That's Stupid, will precede The Bake Sale with a release via the Cool Kids' new website in the next week.

Additionally, the Kids have announced the title of another new release for us to anticipate. It's their full-length debut, and it's called When Fish Ride Bicycles. (Does this mean the Cool Kids are professing their support for the feminist movement? -- Ed)

In the midst of revealing release info, the Cool Kids still found time to firm up some tour dates. May is full of U.S. dates for the duo, including a performance in cooperation with the touring Darfur Now documentary. Summer brings European shows (with even more to be announced!), their Lollapalooza set, and their inclusion on the traveling Rock the Bells festival bill. [MORE...]

Holopaw, Boyracer, Brittle Stars Play Pop Mayhem!

Indie pop lovers of the world, it's time to get all giddy again. Gainesville Pop Mayhem! takes over the titular Florida city from May 7-10 (the poster says it begins May 8, but we swear there's a show on May 7 too), invading several local venues and stuffing them with the sweet, sweet sounds of twee, cuddlecore, dream pop, and the like.

Scheduled performers include onetime Sub Pop act Holopaw, Australian mainstays the Cannanes, and post-punkers Human Television, plus the first live outing from the mighty Boyracer in way too long. The icing on this cake, however, is a one-off, ten year anniversary reunion performance from exquisitely melancholy melody-makers Brittle Stars, whose singer will be flown in all the way from Israel for the gig.

These delights will be supplemented by sets from Orange Twin act Nana Grizol, Mahogany pals Brasilia, too-cute coupling Citra Super, and-- well, you can read the adorable poster up there, or you can swing on over to the Pop Mayhem! website for the full scoop.

A Hawk & A Hacksaw Tour With Hun Hangar Ensemble

As an unexpected addendum to last year's A Hawk and a Hacksaw and the Hun Hangár Ensemble EP, A Hawk and a Hacksaw have divulged the details of their first North American tour in years. Fittingly, the duo of Heather Trost and former Neutral Milk Hotel drummer Jeremy Barnes will arrive on our shores supplemented by members of the aforementioned Hun Hangár Ensemble from Budapest, Hungary.

When they get here, one of A Hawk and a Hacksaw's stops is at the Pitchfork Music Festival. Before they arrive, however, they have a bunch of European shows to play this month. [MORE...]

Add, oh, a billion or so more names to the list of those slogging through the (inevitable) rain for this year's Glastonbury Festival when it rumbles through the hills around the English town for which it's named June 27-29. This Glastonbury, it's big, innit?

Of course, those folks join the previously mentioned Leonard Cohen, Hot Chip, British Sea Power, the Verve, Kings of Leon, Neil Diamond, and controversial-to-idiots headliner Jay-Z. (Is it that you're worried you're not gonna get enough flash-in-the-pan guitar bands over the weekend? Or is there some other, better rapper you're aware of that we're not? Enjoy your Joe Lean and your Jing Jang Jong, naysayers.)

Mark "BBQ" Sultan Tours, Plays Dates With Clinic

Garage rocker Mark Sultan is a man of many aliases. He's probably best known as the BBQ half of the King Khan & BBQ Show, but he also released his first album under his given name last year, The Sultanic Verses.

Though he's without King Khan's craziness for the time being, Sultan will continue to support The Sultanic Verses on a North American tour under his BBQ guise this month. He'll kick things off May 10 in Ottawa, before closing out the month with a week of gigs opening for Clinic-- whose trademark surgical masks should pair nicely with Sultan's getup up there. [MORE...]

Spoon Add Dates, Britt Daniel Plays Solo

Tomorrow night, Britt Daniel's placing Spoon securely on hold as he takes to the state of Solana Beach, California's Belly Up Tavern for a rare solo show. But don't think for a second Britt's trading it all in for dreams of his given name in lights. Spoon's lined up a handful of new Stateside dates, including their return to Union Park as part of this summer's Pitchfork Music Festival, a date with Beck at the Hollywood Bowl, a Celebrate Brooklyn! appearance, and a newly added threepeat in San Francisco in late September.

When Britt's not enjoying a little space from his overbearing bandmates, he's helping to explain why he loves music in a new documentary and throwing a little weight behind Oregon Senatorial candidate Steve Novick. And, hey, did you know that recent Don't You Evah EP is currently perched at #3 on Billboard's singles sales chart after taking the top prize last week? (Prodigy is #1 this week. So that's OK.) Hey, this Spoon band is really going places!

Places like a little television program called "The Simpsons". A Spoon tune will appear in the Sunday, May 4 episode of the beloved show, entitled "Any Given Sundance". As the band write in their MySpace blog, "really, could there be a greater honor?" Perhaps only the Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence. [MORE...]

Gregor Samsa Issue Rest, Tour Tirelessly

With members dispersed in New York, Chicago, Boston, D.C., and Richmond, Virginia, Gregor Samsa wrote, recorded, and mastered their latest full-length offering, Rest, all over the damn place. Which, you know, probably isn't the easiest way to go about making a record. You can reward Gregor Samsa for their service by picking up Rest-- in one of five exciting formats-- starting May 13 thanks to The Kora Records.

Gregor Samsa will soon reform like Voltron for a European tour, which has them playing some shows with Brooklyn-based Kayo Dot. [MORE...]

Deerhunter Gain Member for Forthcoming Tour

Everybody, meet Whitney. Whitney, everybody. Make yourself acquainted: Whitney's a classic rock fan, a Georgia native, a former cheerleader, and a real beast on the guitar. (We don't know her last name yet.) UPDATE: It's Petty! Whitney Petty!

At least, so say the fellas of Deerhunter, who've hired Whitney on as their guitarist for their forthcoming tour. With Whitney onboard, Deerhunter are once again a five-piece, and more ready than ever to build up their Microcastle. They'll hit Dublin with HEALTH next weekend before heading to the ATP vs. Pitchfork Fest. The band has also firmed up a few more dates on their joint European plans with new Thrill Jockey signees High Places, and recently opted for a handful opening spots on the forthcoming Nine Inch Nails tour.

As for Atlas Sound, well, Bradford's got plenty of dates of his own to attend to, including that stop at this summer's Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. The expanded Let the Blind hits shelves in Europe May 5 from 4AD, and he's set to remix the Sian Alice Group for a fall EP. [MORE...]

Grizzly Bear Add Shows Between Radiohead Gigs

Their stint with rhymin' Simon over and done with, the fellas of Grizzly Bear are prepping themselves for two more inspired pairings: their tour with Radiohead and a newly added date with the New Pornographers. In addition, the Grizz have woven quite a few new dates into their late summer plans, which kick off with an appearance at the Sled Island Music Festival in Calgary.

In other Grizzly Bear news, new tune "While You Wait for the Others", performed live on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" recently made its way to the internet in proper MP3 form, and by golly, it's already over there on Forkcast. Oh, and 3/4ths of the Bear clan helped Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson craft his forthcoming debut LP. [MORE...]
