Resident Evil 5 isn't dropping until early 2009. And maybe that's why GamePro was floored when it saw the world's first gameplay demo of Capcom's next iteration in the popular zombie series. Editors Chris Morell and Travis Moses were on hand, and here they share their honest impressions of Resident Evil 5.

Chris Morell thinks:

Considering how tight-lipped Capcom has been about Resident Evil 5 since the first trailer was announced last E3, I really didn't expect to see more than a new trailer at Capcom's "Captivate" event in Vegas. Boy was I wrong. After a little teasing from the game's two producers on hand, Jun Takeuchi (Lost Planet and Resident Evil series) and Masachicka Kawata (RE4 Wii), we feasted our eyes upon an absolutely amazing 20-minute long gameplay demo of Resident Evil 5, the world's first playable showing.

Set in a small African village overrun by the Las Plagas virus from RE4, Chris Redfield again finds himself in a sticky situation.

The demo began with Chris inside a small kitchen-like shed, armed with a pistol. But Chris also carried a shotgun and a machete strapped to his back. As Chris Refield walked around the room, we saw the gorgeous new graphics and a new physics engine. The developers smashed a few objects to show off the destructible environmental objects.

But there wasn't much time to take in the sights. The first zombie (really a Las Plagas-infected villager) crept outside the window, and then smashed his way inside. Chris used his pistol to fend him off, but more started piling in. A nearby bookcase served as a handy barricade, but the determined zombies tore right though the obstruction. Chris continued to fire, hitting several pursuers with bloody head and extremity shots, and I noticed they limped when shot in the leg area. Impressive!

At this point, Chris was outnumbered The zombies were now tearing down the shed's only door (he even shot off wooden pieces of the door in the progress), and Chris was all but surrounded. But then, a deafening smash shattered a gaping hole in the side of the structure. Turns out a giant-sized zombie had just swung a long axe-like weapon through the shed's wall. Chris escaped through the hole to the outdoor village area.

So far, so awesome...
