Nine Princes in Amber

Book 1 of 3

Copyright 1996
Adapted by Terry Bisson
Cover by Lou Harrison
Illustrated by Lou Harrison
Lettered by Todd Klein
Also released as a German translation

The initial book in the comic adaptation of Amber begins with an essay by Roger Zelazny entitled "The Road to Amber", in which he talks about the books without talking about what's in the books. He ascribes his inspiration for Amber to two sources: a fiscination with tarot decks, and a walk through Baltimore which led to the idea of shadow-shifting.

This book ends with Corwin, Random, and Deirdre at water's edge, preparing to descend the stairs to Rebma. They are unpursued.

This volume begins with "What Has Gone Before", summarizing book 1. It extends the story to the point of Corwin and Bleys embarking on their attack of Amber. The book ends with a glimpse of the next issue:

Corwin and Bleys lead Shadow armies of nightmare creatures in a grand assault on Amber. Eric the Usurper counters them with his own Shadow forces--and the forces of Nature as well. Thousands die in the conflict, which takes Corwin to the steps of Mount Kolvin. Here, Corwin must fight his final battle to wrest control of the one true world, AMBER.

This volume's "What Has Gone Before" covers books 1 and 2. The issue then completes the tale told in the original book. As in issue 2, the comic ends with a preview of the events of the next issue:

Corwin's quest to wrest the throne of Amber from his usurping brother Eric continues in THE GUNS OF AVALON, a three-book graphic novel series featuring the new art team of Christopher Schenck on pencils, Andrew Pepoy on inks, and Digital Chameleon on drums.

The Guns of Avalon

Book 1 of 3

The first book in the second trilogy of comics brings new readers up to date with a description of Amber and the events of the three previous comics with "The Legend of Amber", the equivalent of previous "What Has Gone Before" summaries. The book then covers Corwin's stay in the land of Lorraine, ending at his departure with Ganelon for Avalon. The end-book preview blurb reads:

Corwin and Ganelon begin their ride to Avalon through shadow worlds. On the way they come across a thief who reveals that a fierce battle has been fought between invaders from the Dark Circle and the defense forces of Avalon, who are led by a valiant general called "The Protector." Corwin discovers the identity of "The Protector," encounters a sultry young sprite named Dara, and gathers up the rare materials needed to conquer the One True World...AMBER.

This volume's "What Has Gone Before" is a departure from previous summaries. It does not detail any of the events of prior comics, giving instead a textual description of the activity of the current issue. It appears this was a mistaken substitution of the summary intended for book 3, since the identical text appears in the next issue. Book 2 brings the story to the point of Corwin and Ganelon leaving Avalon to journey towards Amber, and ends with another next-issue blurb:

Corwin and Bleys travel back through Shadow, heading for Amber with their load of weapons and ammunition. Along the way they find the chaos of the Black Road has started to invade the Shadow World as well. In Amber, Corwin finds that Eric, the usurper-king, has mounted an all-out war on the forces of chaos, with the future existence of Amber hanging in the balance.

As mentioned above, this issue's "What Has Gone Before" covers only book 2, and was mistakenly printed in book 2. This issue finishes the story told in the original book, and was the last release in this adaptation project. Instead of a preview of the next book, the issue ends with Terry Bisson's "Roger Zelazny: An Appreciation", which was also published in the 1996 World Fantasy Program Book.

Availability

The comics originally retailed for $6.95 each, but show up fairly frequently on ebay for significantly less. Keeping an eye out there is probably your best bet. If you're in a hurry, you can also check Mile High Comics, which usually has them in stock. (Go to "DC Comics" then search for "Amber" using the search box.)
