Birmingham Mint

Birmingham Mint
Closed for the production of coins for circulation in 2003 but a business remains under the name of the Birmingham Mint producing high quality proofs, commemorative coins and medals.

The building is located in Icknield St. The mint started in 1850 and moved to this site in the 1862 and by 1889 had become the biggest private mint in the world. Orders for coins came from Russia, Brazil, Mexico and Egypt, amongst others. The Birmingham Mint was involved in making blanks for the Euro coins.
