Younger Dylan's new solo CD doesn't fall far from the family tree

Thursday, June 12, 12 00 a.m.

Like father, like son. His father has a well-documented eccentric personality and is arguably one of the single most influential songwriters of all time. So, OK, perhaps Jakob Dylan isn't nearly as influential or eccentric as his famous father Bob Dylan, but he sure is almost as reclusive.

Broussard's diligence brings his career to new highs

Thursday, June 12, 12 00 a.m.

For most bands, first and foremost, it's about getting out there and playing live. Which is why, during his short albeit heralded career, Marc Broussard has worked hard to establish himself as a live performer. His music is an amalgamation of funk and blues, as well as rock and R&B;, along with a flair for feeling his Southern roots.

ZZ Top blows the roof off the PAC

Thursday, June 12, 12 00 a.m.

I am a child of the '80s. I was there as a teenager to witness the birth of the age of the music video, and saw acts such as Duran Duran, Billy Idol and Madonna shoot to stardom on the merits of the bands' respective clips on MTV.

Critic captures Souls Harbor at Halligan's in West Ashley

Thursday, June 5, 12 00 a.m.

While thousands of tourists and locals alike were soaking up the culture downtown at the Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto festivals this past weekend, a few hundred alternative-minded folks gathered at a not-so-little bar in West Ashley to hear some tooth-rattling metal music courtesy of the Beaufort band Souls Harbor.

Louisiana pop-rock band brings high energy to the Isle of Palms

Thursday, June 5, 12 00 a.m.

It's not that Fred LeBlanc doesn't know how to do anything else. He could very well write songs for other artists. He certainly could work as a booking agent. He most definitely would make for a great manager. And chances are there's plenty of other nonmusic related work the New Orleans native co...

Lowcountry native musician just 'Flew South' with band

Thursday, June 5, 12 00 a.m.

All too often we see stars in the music world that have been seemingly plucked out of obscurity and placed lovingly in the fabled catbird seat. I'm talking about the American Idols, the Britney Spears, and the other folks that rely more on looks and luck than actual talent. Just so you know, there are indeed still people out there who work hard and stick to their dreams through thick and thin, hoping for that one big break.

This Week

Thursday, May 29, 12 00 a.m.

Chapel Hill lo-fi, indie band North Elementary is largely the creation of vocalist/pianist/guitarist John Harrison. After splitting from the popular and critically acclaimed indie group The Comas in 2002, Harrison began recruiting musicians to perform songs he had been writing while performing with The Comas. North Elementary recorded the albums "Out of Phase," "Lose Your Favorite Things" and "Weeble Wobble Sound Series" (vinyl only) with the aid of Seven Mary Three singer Jason Ross and Sir Jerry Kee (Superchunk, Mendoza Line).

Sister Hazel's career still going strong

Thursday, May 29, 12 00 a.m.

For the guys in Sister Hazel, the band's unyielding accessibility over their decade-plus career has translated into loyalty. Check that. Fans of the five-piece — Ken Block, Drew Copeland, Ryan Newell, Jett Beres and Mark Trojanowski — of Gainesville, Fla., are extraordinarily ...

Zac Brown growing Lowcountry fan base

Thursday, May 29, 12 00 a.m.

When I headed out to the Windjammer on Sunday night, it was to relax and have a couple of beverages with friends to enjoy the Memorial Day weekend. I had heard things about the headliner that night, the Zac Brown Band, but I had not had the chance to check out Brown and his fellow musicians. At the end of the night, I have to admit that I walked out of the 'Jammer as a new admirer of Brown's music.
