300 Mixes History, Fantasy

Zack Snyder, director of the film version of Frank Miller's stylized graphic novel 300, told SCI FI Wire that the filmmakers found a way to add a touch of fantasy to the tale, based on the true story of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C.

Fantasy enters the picture thanks to a new narrator: Dilios, who is one of the 300 Spartans who used strategy and their knowledge of the Greek landscape to hold an enormous, invading Persian army at bay for three days. Dilios is a natural storyteller: Like a fisherman who exaggerates the size of the one that got away, he never hesitates to use artistic license.

"Dilios is a guy who knows how not to wreck a good story with truth," Snyder said in an interview. "If he's telling you the story about what happened to his boys, and he's talking about an elephant, and you've never seen an elephant, that elephant's going to be crazy. If the movie takes place from Dilios' point of view, the audience can make the jump. They don't have to go, 'OK, we're going to Frank Miller world, so check your keys at the door.'"

Miller, who wrote and co-directed Sin City, acts as 300's consultant. He described 300 as "a story of a lifetime for me. I saw the clunky old 20th Century Fox movie when I was 7 years old. It changed the whole course of my creative life."

Miller agreed to let 300 be filmed because Snyder and the producers were keen on making a movie that is faithful to Miller's story and matches his artistic style. On set while 300 was being filmed in Montreal, Miller was happy with what he saw. "The stylization of the comic book has been thoroughly embraced," he said. ?Resa Nelson
