06/17/2008 06:14 PM CDT - A person can't turn around these days without hearing somebody say "transparency." Or "accountability." How are public decisions made? What are the goals? How do we measure progress toward them? Who's accountable for that progress?

06/16/2008 07:44 PM CDT - If there is a movie made about the national foreclosure crisis, it could follow the trail of Michael Prieskorn. As detailed by reporter Jennifer Bjorhus in Sunday's newspaper, it would include these elements: housing "sales" with paid "buyers" who may have never seen the homes; a wide-open, lightly regulated loan market; greed as far as the eye can see; and new homes and condos with "foreclosure" signs and algae growing in the swimming pools.

Attacking doctors online
06/17/2008 05:58 PM CDT - Are the disgruntled patients who are attacking physicians online ("More patients are going online to rave or rant about their health care," June 10) trying to improve the quality of medical care?

Spreading congestion
06/16/2008 05:37 PM CDT - If cars are banned from the one section of Washington Avenue ("U reversing position on light rail," June 13), wouldn't they also be banned from the Washington Avenue Bridge, by default? And wouldn't a major artery into downtown Minneapolis be eliminated, forcing the 20,000 to 30,000 displaced trips per day to utilize 10th Avenue, I-35W and I-94? University Avenue and Fourth Street at 10th Avenue and I-35W will be even more congested than they are now.

Less safe at home?
06/13/2008 07:30 PM CDT - Grants that fund Minnesota's 41 Living-At-Home/Block Nurse Programs, including the Payne-Phalen program where I work, were not funded during the recent legislative session.

The White Bear Lake community, our friends, neighbors, co-workers, the St. Mary of the Lake community and even the strangers who extended their hands and hearts to us as we grieve for Kathy and Jason Thibault. The news of the tragic car accident traveled fast, and we are overwhelmed by the love and support we have received. Words can't express how grateful we are for your presence in our lives.

Still a fascinating idea, strengthened by persistently smart power
06/17/2008 06:13 PM CDT - A new international relations orthodoxy is coalescing, to the effect that America is slouching toward mediocrity. In newspaper columns and on TV talk shows you will hear journalists charting the 'relentless relative decline' of the United States. The military is overstretched; the economy is exposed; the political system is broken; the punters are suffering from an Iraq-induced hangover; and when it comes to international legitimacy, the White House has maxed out America's credit card. And all the time, potential competitors such as China, the European Union, Russia, India and Iran are closing in.

As the surge succeeds, Iraqis rethink America's role
06/17/2008 06:13 PM CDT - A debate is heating up inside Iraq — and inside Washington — that will shape America's relationship with Iraq under the next president.

    Answer questions, 'Friends of Angelo'
06/17/2008 05:58 PM CDT - Seeking to refinance his Delaware beach house in 2004, Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., did what any ordinary property owner in his position would have done. On the advice of his friend Jim Johnson, who also happened to be the former chief executive officer of mortgage giant Fannie Mae, he called Angelo Mozilo, the CEO of Countrywide Financial. Soon Conrad had a $1.07 million loan — at a discount, personally ordered for him by Mozilo, of $10,500 in fees.

Like a plague of locusts eating through the Nile Delta
06/16/2008 07:44 PM CDT - CAIRO, Egypt — The current global energy-food crisis is, understandably, a pocketbook issue in America. But when you come to Egypt, you see how, in a society where so many more people live close to the edge, food and fuel prices could become enormously destabilizing. If these prices keep soaring, food and fuel could reshape politics around the developing world as much as nationalism or communism did in their days.

Where the biofuels path ought to lead
06/16/2008 07:44 PM CDT - By Vinod Khosla Last month the Wall Street Journal accused me of advocating subsidies for food-based ethanol. I ought to "take a vow of
