Using Sound

To adjust the volume:

  1. Use the Volume Up and Volume Down volume buttons located on the bottom left of the PSP®.

To turn off the sound (mute):

  1. Press the sound Sound Button button on the bottom right of the PSP® system.

  2. Hold down the sound button for more than one second and the sound is muted.
  3. To clear the mute, press the sound button again or press the Volume Up and Volume Down volume buttons located on the bottom left of the PSP®.

To adjust the tone:

  1. Press the sound Sound Button button located on the bottom right of the PSP®.

  2. Press the sound button again to change the tone as follows:
    • Heavy: Strengthens both bass and treble to produce an intense sound.
    • Pops: Strengthens the mid-range; ideal for vocals.
    • Jazz: Strengthens both bass and treble to produce a balanced sound.
    • Unique: Strengthens bass, treble and mid-range sound.
    • Off: Normal tone.

NOTE: Tone can only be adjusted when using headphones during audio feedback. The tone setting is temporarily set to Off during gameplay.

To adjust the base UMD™ video volume:

  1. Highlight UMD Video Volume icon (UMD Video Volume) under Settings(Settings) from the home menu, and press X Button.
  2. Highlight UMD Video Volume icon(UMD Video Volume) and press X Button.
  3. Highlight the volume setting you want: Normal (default), +1, or +2.
  4. Press X Button to set the volume.

    NOTE: In some UMD™ videos, playback conditions might be determined in advance and the volume options described here may not be available.


To adjust the volume during UMD™ video playback:

  1. During playback, press Triangle Button to display the Control Panel.
  2. Highlight UMD Video Volume icon(UMD Video Volume) and press X Button.

    NOTE: The volume icon is only available during UMD™ video playback; it is not available if you are viewing a video file stored on your Memory Card Duo™.


  3. Keep pressing Sound Settings(Sound Settings) to change the volume as follows: Normal, +1 and +2.
  4. The volume setting is cleared when the UMD™ is ejected.

About Automatic Volume Limiter System (AVLS) Back to top


AVLS can be used to limit the maximum volume to prevent possible danger from being unable to hear what is going on around you when using headphones, as well as to prevent sound from being heard from the headphones by others.

To use the AVLS setting:

  1. Highlight Sound Settings(Sound Settings) under Settings(Settings) from the home menu, and press X Button.
  2. Highlight AVLS and press X Button.
  3. Highlight Off (the default setting) to turn AVLS off, allowing for no limits when the volume is adjusted manually. Or highlight On to turn AVLS on, setting a limit on the maximum volume.

To change the key tone setting:

  1. Highlight Sound Settings(Sound Settings) under Settings(Settings) from the home menu, and press X Button.
  2. Highlight Key Tone and press X Button.
  3. Highlight Off to turn key tone off, setting the system to make no sound when you press a button on the PSP®. Or highlight On (the default setting) to turn key tone on, setting the system to make a confirmation sound when you press a button on the PSP®.
