XL to Issue Banned Be Your Own Pet Tracks in U.S.
You'll recall a few months back that we reported on the tale of Be Your Own Pet, Universal Records, and a trio of tracks from the Nashville punks' new one Get Awkward that didn't sit right with the powers that be at the album-releasing conglomerate. It seems Universal weren't too keen on the "violent" lyrics of the BYOP songs "Becky", "Black Hole", and "Blow Yr Mind", so they kept said jams off of the U.S. release of Get Awkward. (The songs stayed on the international version.)You may also recall a quick mention we made in the same report of BYOP's international label XL Recordings' plan to issue the offending cuts in the States as their own single. True to their word, XL will issue all three tunes on a mini-EP they've cheekily dubbed Get Damaged. The set is due digitally June 3, with the CD and limited edition deluxe gatefold double 7" hitting shelves June 24. (And check out that cover up there!) Expect the full-fledged teenage riots current engulfing Europe in the wake of the uncensored Get Awkward to hit a fever pitch in the States by early July.
Presently out on the road with She Wants Revenge on the NYLON tour, BYOP still have those Warped Tour dates to attend to, a couple new early August gigs, and appearances at the Reading and Leeds fests before the summer's up. [MORE...]
Tom Waits Extends "Glitter and Doom" Tour
Photo by Michael O'BrienDon't you worry, Europe, you'll get your "Glitter and Doom" this year too. Sly devil Tom Waits has extended his so-named tour with the addition of 15 dates on the continent spanning seven cities. This second round of gigs begins July 12 in San Sebastián, Spain, and includes the inaugural Waits forays into Spain and the Czech Republic.
The singer/trivia buff must first, of course, wrap his U.S. jaunt, which kicks off June 17 in Phoenix. And hey, here's the fine band you'll find backing Mr. Waits on all dates this spring and summer: Larry Taylor (upright bass), Patrick Warren (keyboards), Omar Torrez (guitars), Vincent Henry (woodwinds), and Casey Waits (drums and percussion).
As Waits mentioned in yesterday's self-interview, "They play with racecar precision and they are all true conjurers. I'm doing songs with them I've never attempted outside the studio. They are all multi-instrumentalists and they polka like real men." And that, as we all know, is a feat not to be taken lightly. [MORE...]
The Rumble Strips Bring Debut Album to U.S.
Rumble Strips, meet airstrips. After releasing their debut album, Girls and Weather, in their UK homeland last year, the up-and-coming foursome will bring the record to the States this summer.Gigantic Music will release Girls and Weather in the U.S. on August 5, but the band's tour dates remain Europe-bound this spring and summer. However, the Strips are planning another tour for the fall, so maybe they'll throw a bone to us Yanks with that one. [MORE...]
Animal Collective, YACHT Remix Ratatat
Ladies and gents, you may not know it just yet, but a script has just been flipped. You see, Animal Collective have been remixed plenty, but they themselves have never remixed anybody under their, er, collective title.
Ratatat, on the other hand, just love to take somebody else's track and do their thing to it; in fact, just the other day, we referred to them as "guitarlectro remix experts," a qualification we stand by. But now, Animal Collective have selected "Mirando" from Ratatat's forthcoming LP3 and done with it what they please. And-- voila-- out comes Animal Collective's first-ever remix, a "10 minute
techno wonder," according to a press release.
But wait! There's more! It seems that YACHT, Zongamin, Copy, and E*Rock (aka Eric Mast, brother of Ratatat's Evan "E*Vax" Mast) have also promised remixes of various LP3 cuts, and we can all "expect to hear these soon."
No, we don't know when/how any of these remixes are going to be released. Sorry. But we do know that LP3 is due July 8 on XL, while the "Shiller"/"Mahalo" 7" is out now.
Jens, AIH, Dirty Three Members on Guy Blackman LP
Have you heard about this Guy Blackman character? Sure, he seems normal enough at first blush, but I hear he's actually an Adult Baby. The Melbourne, Australia-based cherub-mugged singer/songwriter, once of much-loved indie poppers Sleepy Township, recently issued his solo debut, Adult Baby, on Unstable Ape Records. And if the prospect of a full-grown child playing the sensitive rocker type wasn't reason enough to get you excited, Blackman's bevy of Baby-sitters should do the trick. On "Dark & Quiet Place", Blackman duets with none other than Jens Lekman. There are also instrumental contributions from Mick Turner of Dirty Three, along with members of Architecture in Helsinki, Ground Components, and the Crayon Fields. There's even a "fragile girl group vocal" from the Art of Fighting's Peggy Frew. All that and the presence of an Adult Baby! It's like that movie Jack, only with Jens instead of Fran Drescher. Big improvement!
Blackman, who also runs the Chapter Music imprint, has a handful of Australian dates on the way. [MORE...]
Weezer Issue Yet Another Single From Red Album
So here we have "Troublemaker", the third single (and opening track) from Weezer's third album called Weezer. Released without much in the way of warning to iTunes, like, already, the peppily self-aware riff rocker (with telling lyric "I'm gonna be a rock star /And youSome folks whose minds are already made up-- that is, the types who've preordered the disc offa iTunes while the singles roll in, or intend to do so later on-- have cried foul to the Weezer camp about the potential of paying for these advanced tracks now, then having to re-buy them yet again upon the album's release. Fear not, early adopters: according to a MySpace bulletin, Weezer III is "part of [Apple's] 'complete my album' program, which means you won't get charged more than the total album price for an album [from which] you bought a single or more before the release." Whew!
Recall that the deluxe UK edition of the Red Album is due June 9 digitally and June 16 physically on Polydor, make some sense of Rivers' ongoing collaborative sawngwriting contest, note that Weezer have no live dates scheduled at the moment, and go make your trouble elsewhere.
Nirvana, NIN, Wilco, Spoon Swag in Charity Auction
Plus stuff from M.I.A., Common, Dylan, Springsteen, every other famous music person ever
Indie nerds can bid on goodies from Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Spoon, Wilco, M.I.A., and Common, who join a truly gargantuan list of memorabilia-makers that includes, well, everybody. No, really: Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, the Beach Boys, Madonna, Otis Redding, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Ramones, Queen, Bo Diddley, Steely Dan, KISS, Alice Cooper, Joan Jett, Blondie, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, the Doors, Frank Zappa, Metallica, Oasis, and, um, Miley Cyrus.
Among the more interesting items: a hat worn by Bono, moccasins worn by Buddy Holly, a Patti Smith self-portrait, a cricket bat used by Queen's Brian May, a guitar signed by Oscar-winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, The Sea Inside), a painting of Sid Vicious by Dee Dee Ramone, a trumpet played by Miles Davis, a wooden spoon signed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Madonna's high school yearbook, and a toaster Elton John received as a wedding gift.
A live "Icons of Music" auction will take place at the Times Square Hard Rock Cafe in NYC on May 31, and prospective bidders may also do their thing online via Julien's Auctions. All proceeds go to Music Rising's relief efforts. I call dibs on the toaster.
Spiritualized Extend Tour Into the Fall
Onward and upward? Well, yeah, dudes, he's a Spaceman, that's just how he rolls. Jason Pierce and his Spiritualized have thrown a bunch of dates onto a tour already chock full of 'em, with the expanded itinerary running well into the fall. And of all Mr. Pierce's takeoffs and landings, one touchdown stands out: his appearance at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.Songs in A&E will be released May 26 in the UK via Universal/Spaceman and the following day in the States from Fontana International/Spaceman. Details on all the other ways you can load up on A&E are available in that news story there. [MORE...]
Regina Spektor, Oscar the Grouch Celebrate Israel
To say nothing of Mandy Patinkin
Israel@60: A Capital Celebration, a massive 60th birthday party for the state of Israel, takes place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on the afternoon of June 1.
The free affair will be emceed by stage and screen actor Mandy Patinkin (all together now: "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."). It features performances from songwriter Regina Spektor and Israeli rockers Mashina, as well as Oscar the Grouch and his Israeli cousin Moishe Oofnik. (Does this mean Oscar the Grouch is Jewish?)
In fact, throughout the afternoon, several "Shalom Sesame" performances will take place. You do know "Shalom Sesame", right? The Israeli "Sesame Street"? Apparently-- and this is news to your quasi-gentile reporter-- this is a Hebrew school staple! All the videos they showed in Catholic school were about some guy who died.
Death Cab for Cutie's Narrow Stairs Debuts at #1
Shucks, guess the secret is out
The set sold a cool 144,000 copies, enough to beat some dead guy and retire last week's first-time chart-topper Neil Diamond to seventh place status, plus a good 54,000 more than the 90,000 Plans moved in its first week. To celebrate this milestone, Death Cab will, er, kick off that tour they had already planned on Saturday. [MORE...]
TVOTR, Justice, Raconteurs, CSS Do Treasure Island
As do Vampire Weekend, Spiritualized, Goldfrapp, Okkervil River, Hot Chip, Fleet Foxes
Band for band, there's hardly a non-gem in this bunch: TV on the Radio, Justice, the Raconteurs, Vampire Weekend, Spiritualized, Goldfrapp, Okkervil River, Hot Chip, CSS, Fleet Foxes, Dodos, Aesop Rock, Tokyo Police Club, Tegan and Sara, Amon Tobin, the Kills, Dr. Dog, Antibalas, Foals, John Vanderslice, and more.
And if bands aren't really your thing, there are always the sideshow attractions, including a ferris wheel, live art installations, "treasure hunts", and the guy with the real loot, the Ice Cream Man!
RMXXOLOGY Adds Eminem, More Details Revealed
Eminem-- remember him?
RMXXOLOGY, Delicious Vinyl's compilation of tracks from its back catalog remixed by newer dance and hip-hop artists, just got a whole lot more delicious. And a whole lot more confusing.
OK, here's the deal:
What we didn't know before is that RMXXOLOGY has two volumes. In addition to Hot Chip, Peaches, and Aaron LaCrate & Debonair Samir remixes of tracks by the Pharcyde, Tone-Loc, and Young MC, Vol. 1's tracklist includes an Eminem remix of Masta Ace's "Slaughtahouse". Vol. 1 gets a worldwide digital release on June 3, and a two-LP vinyl version follows in the U.S. and Europe on July 29. The one difference with the vinyl release is that it doesn't include the digital/CD copy's five instrumental tracks.
The CD release is where things get more complicated, largely because it is a two-disc package that includes the still-tentative Vol. 2 as its second disc. Right now, it's scheduled for a July 29 release in the U.S., but it could get pushed back to August 12, depending on the completion of a few Vol. 2 contributions. The list of Vol. 2 remixers tentatively includes Diplo, DJ Mehdi, Pink Enemy's Cory Nitta, Aaron LaCrate, Bobby Birdman, and Bass Over Babylon. The CD has no confirmed international release date.
To top all of this off, Delicious is planning the release of more singles throughout the summer and a deluxe vinyl/digital box set featuring all of this content in September. We shall see, dudes. Just put out Vol. 1 first! [MORE...]
