Seven dominates television in 2006

More Australians now watch Seven than any other television network in Australia.

Building on extraordinary gains in 2005, Seven has punched heavily in 2006, gaining again in total viewers and key adult demographics in primetime. Seven leads in breakfast television and news and public affairs for the second consecutive year.

- Seven is up in total viewers, 18-49s and 25-54s in primetime

- Seven is number 1 in primetime for 18-54s and grocery buyers

- Seven dominates most-watched series on television

- Seven wins more nights in primetime than any other network

- Seven is number 1 in breakfast television

- Seven is number 1 in news and public affairs

- Seven is number 1 across 6:00am-midnight

Seven is powering in primetime, delivering the number 1 and four of the five most-watched series in primetime. Dancing with the Stars is the biggest programme on television – with Dancing with the Stars 4 ranking as the number 1 programme and Dancing with the Stars 5 outperforming every series on the Nine Network in 2006.

Four of Seven’s five programmes in the top ten programmes on television are Australian: Dancing with the Stars 4, Border Security, Medical Emergency and Dancing with the Stars 5. Seven places 8 Australian programmes in the top 20, 12 in the top 25 and 14 in the top 40 programmes.

In total, Seven has the number 1 and number 2 most-watched programmes on television (Dancing with the Stars and Border Security), and delivers depth through primetime with 4 of the top 5, 5 of the top 10, 11 of the top 20, 15 of the top 30 and 18 of the top 40 programmes.

In addition to securing the number 1 series on television, with Dancing with the Stars, Seven also has the number 1 scripted series (Desperate Housewives), the number 1 factual programme (Border Security), the number 1 entertainment series (Dancing with the Stars), the number 1 comedy series (My Name Is Earl), the number 1 movie (Pirates of the Caribbean), the number 1 Australian series (Dancing with the Stars) and the number 1 international series (Desperate Housewives.

All Saints is this year’s most-watched Australian drama series and Home and Away has once again dominated its nightly timeslot and next year moves into a landmark 20th season on Seven.

As the 2006 television season ends, Seven is the network with the new hits going into 2007.

Seven has 3 of the top 5, 4 of the top 10 and 8 of the top 20 new programmes on television:
It Takes Two, The Force, Where Are They Now, Prison Break, Police Files, My Name Is Earl, Criminal Minds and The Real Seachange.

It Takes Two is a breakout hit and places in the top five along with The Force and Where Are They Now. Prison Break is the standout new number 1 scripted series and the highest-rating new series this year from the United States. My Name Is Earl is the number 1 new comedy series.

Joining Desperate Housewives, Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, My Name Is Earl and Prison Break in 2007 are the four biggest new programmes on American television, Heroes, Shark, Ugly Betty, Brothers and Sisters and the critically acclaimed What About Brian.

Joining Dancing with the Stars and It Takes Two will be Australia’s Got Talent, along with new series for Border Security, The Force, Medical Emergency, Police Files, Where Are They Now, Home and Away, All Saints, The Real Seachange and Better Homes and Gardens.


Commenting, Seven’s Director of Programming and Production, Tim Worner, said: “We have terrific momentum heading into 2007. This year was all about building on our audience gains of the past eighteen months and taking Seven to a higher level.

“We're strong and competitive and we have great programmes for next year - and many of them are Australian, building on our leadership in the creation of Australian television. In primetime in 2006, Seven is up in total viewers and the primary advertiser audience demographic, 25-54s. Seven is number 1 for 18-54s in primetime. Seven is now the leading network across all dayparts – 6:00am-midnight.

Nightly and Weekly Primetime Analysis

Seven won more nights in primetime – 6:00pm-midnight – than any other network in 2006.

Excluding the Commonwealth Games, Seven was number 1 on 118 nights (Nine: 113, Ten: 28). In weekly wins, Seven won 12 of the 37 non-Commonwealth Games weeks and was within 1% of leadership in a further 11 weeks. Seven and Nine also tied one week.


News and Public Affairs

Seven is number 1 in news and public affairs – leading Nine for the second consecutive year.

Seven News is up 5% on 2005 and up 18% on 2003. Nine News is down on 2005.
Seven News leads Nine News by 110,000 viewers (up from 30,000 viewers in 2005).

Today Tonight is up 2% on 2005 and up 10% on 2003. A Current Affair is down on 2005.
Today Tonight leads A Current Affair by 165,000 viewers (up from 137,000 viewers in 2005).

Breakfast Television

Sunrise continues to dominate breakfast television.

Sunrise is up 23 per cent on 2005, gaining 70,000 more viewers. Today has added less than 7,000 new viewers on last year – despite numerous changes in hosts and formats.

Sunrise leads Today by more than 170,000 viewers (up from 110,000 in 2005). Sunrise’s 54% advantage in viewers in 2005 has ballooned to an 83% viewer advantage in 2006.

Sports

The Australian Football League and V8s are back on Seven in 07 – further bolstering Seven’s impressive sports portfolio which this year delivered an extraordinary 2.75 million viewers for the Men’s Final in The Australian Open, an audience that out-ranked every day of sports competition in the Commonwealth Games, each of the three State of Origin matches and every match, including those involving Australia, in the World Cup.

· Seven dominates drama programmes – with the number 1 (Desperate Housewives), three of the top five and five of the top ten: Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, All Saints and Prison Break.

· All Saints is the number 1 Australian produced drama series. Home and Away continues to dominate at 7:00pm.

· Seven dominates movies – with the number 1 (Pirates of the Caribbean) and five of the top ten: Pirates of the Caribbean, Finding Nemo, High School Musical, Cheaper By The Dozen and Calendar Girls.

· Seven dominates entertainment programmes – with the number 1 (Dancing with the Stars 4) and three of the top ten: Dancing with the Stars 4, Dancing with the Stars 5 and It Takes Two. It Takes Two out-performs Idol on Monday and Dancing on Ice.
