TUC urges Southern Africa to send more election observers to Zimbabwe
On the day that the leaders of the Zimbabwean trade movement go on trial in Harare for speaking out against the violence and intimidation of the re-run Presidential election campaign, the TUC has today (Monday) written to the leaders of Zimbabwe's 13 Southern African neighbouring countries, pleading with them to send more election observers into the country before the polls open this Friday (27 June).

Advisory group on Myners principles must not be an industry talking shop, says TUC
The Government's proposal for a new Investment Governance Group (IGG) to oversee the Myners Principles can improve the governance of pension schemes, but runs the risk of becoming an industry talking shop unless it fully represents stakeholders and includes practising member nominated trustees, says the TUC today (Monday).

Women's low pay is the key to tackling child poverty, says TUC
The TUC publishes a briefing today (Friday) which reveals that tackling women's low pay is key to ending child poverty in the UK. The Iron Triangle draws together research from the TUC, the End Child Poverty coalition and the Fawcett Society and finds that women's low pay not only causes their poverty, but also has huge implications for their children's living standards.

No threat of runaway wage-price spiral, says TUC
TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: “Our economic difficulties are caused by reckless lending by bankers and current inflation comes from higher oil, food and commodity prices. “Ordinary people at work will not understand calls for cuts in their standard of living, especially when there is absolutely no sign of restraint at the top and when most pay settlements are modest. Asking low paid and average earners in public or private sector jobs to make sacrifices when those who caused the difficulties continue to draw record bonuses breaches any test of fairness.

TUC Vulnerable Workers Project to share its findings with unions
The TUC Vulnerable Workers Project (VWP) is running a seminar for unions to share its findings and talk about initiatives for organising and representing vulnerable workers. The event, on Monday 14 July at Congress House, will be valuable to unions working on strategies and action plans for engaging with and representing the interests of vulnerable workers. The VWP's report Vulnerable Workers Project: Lessons and Opportunities for Unions will also be launched at the seminar.
