LEE'S     OXYMORON     LIST

Description of Types of Oxymorons

This is a list of all of the oxymorons that I have found / seen / come up with. If you know of another one, let me know. I put them into alphabetical order to help keep duplicates out of the list. If someone sends me an entry that I do not have, and I add it to the list, I will put where I got it from.

A short editorial comment on oxymorons. There are several kinds found in this list.

  1. definitional: The the definition of the words (or parts of the words) are opposite or contradict one another. The "perfect" example of this is "jumbo shrimp," where the words "jumbo" and "shrimp" have definitions that are opposites.
  2. interential: For this, the oxymoron is between the term, coupled with the meaning of the word(s), and it's actual meaning.
Take, for instance "religious tolerance," where the two words are not at odds with each other, per se, but the meaning and the reality are. This particular term is most often used by those who seem to refuse to be tolerant of any aspect of others religious feelings, but are demanding others be completely tolerant of everything in them. Another example of this is "peace force," that is, in theory, an army at war with another army in order to keep the peace...
  3. cultural inversion A third type is where the terms are not opposites, but obviously do not go together, as in "Amtrak schedule." This is because Amtrak is infamous for it's inability to stick to any type of schedule.
  4. bald inversion or barefaced inversion These types are often seen in political comments, where there is the need to, well, openly lie about something. As Orwell helped us see in his book 1984 with terms like "the Ministry of Truth" that was there not to tell the truth, but to tell a lie in such a way that nobody was the wiser. Another example of this is "savage civilization" -- that should qualify as a definitional oxymoron, but for it's use. If the oxymoron is used not as a simple happenstance of words with opposite meanings, but as an unmistakable attempt to redefine either of the words for a political purpose, then that term qualified in this category.
  5. condensed: A condensed oxymoron is where the opposite terms are within the single word, as in "bittersweet" (a style of chocolate).
  6. cultural literacy: This type is where the terms, themselves, are not opposites, but to those who know the cultural significance of the terms, understand that they do not really belong together.
An example could be "Amtrak schedule." This is because Amtrak is infamous for it's inability to stick to any type of schedule.
This also includes terms where some significant knowledge of the environment the terms belong in is required before it is understood. The "Advanced BASIC" example is one of these. The words are opposites, so it would seem to be definitional. However, anyone who has actually written programs in the BASIC computer programming language knows that there is very little that is "advanced" about it -- or that once it truly becomes an "advanced" language, it is no longer BASIC.
  7. usage based or sarcasm based: There is a growing category of words that are used in a way that is decidedly opposite of the word's meaning. These are not included here unless they also happen to qualify in one of the other categories. This is things like "bad mother" -- that might be applied to anyone who is seen as a significant adversary and/or a good friend, where neither the terms "bad" or "mother" would apply to him (or her). Basically I'm refusing to put them here because I refuse to help out the destruction of the language.
Terms that require sarcasm in order to derive their oxymoron-ish feel are also not included here. An example of one is: "yea, right..." where the words say "yes, this is correct" while the meaning, as spoken, is more along the line of "not a chance." Since tonal inflection can make virtually any statement mean the opposite of what the words convey, they are not oxymorons, and so are not included.
  8. bigotry based which I refused to add: I get a few people whose bigotry causes them to see an oxymoron in a phrase that does not exist. An example of one I refuse to add because of her bigotry was "pretty fat." Her contention was that a person who was "fat" could never be "pretty." She qualified as the "self-righteous" bigot entry below. Another refused entry was "white athlete" -- for more reasons than I care to go into here.

How to Read the List

Sometimes there are multiple second words to the first one. These are shown in parenthesis -- see "accurate rumor" for an example. This one selection reads: "accurate rumor" or "accurate estimate" or "accurate" followed by any word that is a guess or subject to change, as in "accurate variable." Sometimes there are multiple second words that go with the first one. I condensed the list by putting them together with the second terms shown in a list surrounded by parenthesis. An example of this is:

  1. accurate ( rumor | estimate | variable | anything that is a guess or subject to change )
...where it could be read as:
      1. accurate rumor
      2. accurate estimate
      3. accurate variable
      4. accurate followed by anything that is a guess or subject to change
The reason for this was not to be confusing, but to condense the list as much as possible without losing any entries in the process.
