Learning, practice and democracy: exploring union learning
Keith Forrester, Lifelong Learning Institute, University of Leeds Janet Johnson, PCS Regional Learning Officer, Department for Work and Pensions The focus of this presentation is on 'union learning'. Keith Forrester will suggest that worker learning occurs within a differential and differentiating context that largely remains unexplored and unrecognised by many researchers interested in workplace learning. Many of the recent evaluation studies of the Union Learning Representative initiative remain conceptually underdeveloped and as a result, minimise or marginalise the richness and radical implications of worker learning. Situating particular conceptions of 'learning' by labour it will be suggested, not only confronts and contests dominant employer discourses informed by human capital theory but also raises wider agitational issues of workplace control, design and democracy.
