Summary of the Suzuki Ignis (2003-)

Price Range: £7,749 to £8,999

Assets

Easy to drive, lively engines, spacious cabin, lots of safety kit, cheap prices

Drawbacks

Plasticky cabin, not that refined, bouncy ride, awkward manual gearbox, feels cheap

Verdict

Cheap, cheerful and really quite practical; better value for money than a Ford Fusion

Suzuki Ignis Review

Overview2 out of 5

Crowd pleaser

Suzuki has restyled and revised its Ignis supermini for 2004, buoyed by its success in the Super 1600 Junior World Rally championships. This small-but-tall five-door - a twin to the latest Subaru G3X Justy - is more spacious and more modern than the Alto city car, more conventional-looking and better to drive than the Wagon R+ mini-MPV, yet more utilitarian than the larger Liana. It has chunky mini-4x4 styling, in a similar vein to the Ford Fusion, Mazda2 and suchlike, but this is now backed up with (optional) four-wheel drive to help it live up to its looks. And unlike the Wagon R+ and closely-related Vauxhall Agila, the Ignis has the advantage of three proper rear seats, all with three-point seatbelts.

The Ignis comes with a revised 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines (94bhp and 99bhp), with front-wheel drive as standard; 4GRIP four-wheel drive is optional with the 1.5-litre engine. An automatic gearbox is optional in 1.5 front-wheel drive models, and a JWRC-inspired Sport model is to be offered later this year. Three-door versions are also to follow in early 2004, although in the meantime, dealers are still stocking three-door examples of the outgoing range.
