Love him or hate him, this season's most talked about contestant, 17-year-old Sanjaya Malakar, finally was eliminated from American Idol on Wednesday night.
What began as a dull and anticlimactic results show ended on one of the highest notes in Idol history. And after a record-high 38 million votes, the dude with the 'do was sent packing.
The chopping block stage was set by Ryan Seacrest when he took our final seven front and center, separating them into two groups.
Our hearts almost skipped a beat when LaKisha and Blake were grouped with Sanjaya. As pro-Sanjaya Howard Stern and his vote-for-the-worst pals were probably sweating bullets, Blake was given the first ticket to safety.
And when Seacrest delivered the buh-bye news, LaKisha flashed the same thank-god-he's-gone look we did upon learning it was sayonara for Sanjaya.
In his final Idol performance, the teen that polarized a nation offered parting lyrics that couldn't have rung any more true in his reprise of "Something to Talk About." "Let's give 'em something to talk about…other than hair!" he sang as – wait for it – he broke down in tears. We hate to say we told you so, America!
Predictably, Simon apologized to anyone who misconstrued his eye roll on Tuesday night's show as disrespectful. And then there were the performances - Fergie taped her best version of "Big Girls Don't Cry" while the week's mentor, Martina McBride, sang her hit single "Anyway."
Which inspired us to wonder if there's anyway we will ever again have to sit through an awkward performance by our fallen one-hair wonder.
