In order to contest in Parliamentary Election on
Congress (I) ticket, actress Jayachithra submitted her application. But
she wasn't given ticket and so she simply worked for the party candidate.
In A.I.A.D.M.K. Nellai conference, a poem criticising
Rajinikanth was read out on the stage. So Rajini fans became very hot and
furious. Rajinikanth Fans' Association chief Sathya Narayana pacified the
fans saying that Rajini would certainly answer that criticism soon.
Actress Ambiga married Prem Kumar, belonging to Kerala,

Vadivelu ('Kaalam Maarippochu'), 'Peraringnar Anna Award' for Liyagath
Alikhan, 'Kalaivaanar Award' for Charli, 'M.G.R.Award' for Sarath Kumar,
'Raja Sando Award' for R.K.Selvamani, 'Kavingnar Kannadasan Award' for
Panju Arunachalam...These awards were presented at a function. Best Film
Award went to 'Indian' (produced by A.M.Ratnam). Best Film 2nd Prize was
awarded to 'Kaathal Kottai' (producer Sivasakthi Pandian). Best Film Special
Award was won by 'Karuvelam Pookkal'.
Super Star Rajinikanth announced around Pongal festival,
whom he would be supporting in the then ensuing Parliamentary elections.
He said that his support was only for the D.M.K.-T.M.C. candidates.
Sivaji Ganesan who had been awarded Dada Saheb Palkhe
Award was given a colourful felicitation at
Tanjore in which Tamilnadu Minister Thamizhkudimahan adorned Sivaji Ganesan
with Golden Crown.
Before he started his foreign trip, Rajinikanth,
on 21st January, 1998, went and met Kalaignar Karunanidhi at the latter's

The A.I.A.D.M.K. of Thirunaavukkarasu faction's general
secretary actress Latha contested as party's candidate in Dindigul Parliamentary
Sarath Kumar, the official candidate of D.M.K. party
to contest in Nellai constituency, was about to travel in a train from
Chennai to Nellai. Before the train
started there spread a rumour that a bomb had been planted in the train.
So the search for the bomb was carried on for two hours. At last it was
confirmed that the information was only a rumour.
Chief Minister Karunanidhi announced that actress
Radhiga, who had been staying away from politics, would again start
campaigning for D.M.K. by touring all through Tamilnadu.
Actress Vijayasanthi started election campaign in
support of B.J.P.party.
Actress Gauthami campaigned for B.J.P. candidates.
The film "Iruvar", directed by Maniratnam was screened
at World Film Festival held in Los Angels, America.
After 25 days' stay in Hong Kong, Rajinikanth returned
to Chennai. As soon as he reached his house from the airport, he met the
press. There he said that if the D.M.K. goverment gets dissolved that would
definitely lead to a great revolution in Tamilnadu.
For the families of those killed in Coimbatore bomb
blast, Rajinikanth offered to lend monetary help. Accordingly Rajinikanth
Fans Association president Sathyanarayana went in person and gave away
Actor Sathyaraj's father Doctor Subbaiyan was
murdered in Coimbatore.
Padma Sree Kamalhaasan participated and spoke at
the inaugural function of the new film "Puratchikkaaran". While speaking
he remarked: 'I have joined the Dravidian party which couldn't get defeated'!
For the film "Natpukkaaka", a song which had been
sung for the first time by Sarath Kumar and Vijayakumar in their own voices,
was recorded at the recording theatre. That song read like this: "Meesaikkaara

To mark the 50th year called Indian Golden Jubilee

K.R.G. was again elected as President of Tamil Film
Chinthamany S.Murugesan was re-elected unopposed
for the Presidentship of Chennai-Kanjeepuram-Thiruvalluvar Districts Cinema
Distributors Association and he occupied this position for the 17th time
consecutively. Murugesan went and met Chief Minister Karunanidhi at the
latter's residence and got his blessings.
There has arisen a situation according to which the
South Indian Cinema Artistes' Association building has got the future prospect
of coming under public auction, for reason of the loan it owes, which has
reached to the level of 2.5 crores of rupees!
D.M.K. Chief Kalaignar Karunanidhi announced that
veteran cinedirector Sridhar had written to him informing his willingness
to join D.M.K. party.
For the family members of the bereaved in the Coimbatore
bomb blast, rupees 12 lakhs was given away as relief fund by Super Star Rajinikanth
from his own pocket and the same was distributed to the concerned by Rajini's
Fans' Association President Sathyanarayana.

Government grant for 25 Tamil films including "Anthi Manthaarai" and "Sundara
India's highest Cinema Award 'Dada Saheb Palghe Award'
recipient Chevaliae Sivaji Ganesan was felicitated at a function held in
Singapore. He was adorned with Golden Garland. Directors K.Balachander,
Bharathi Raja, Kavingnar Vairamuththu and actresses Sowkar Janaki and Saroja
Devi took part in the function.
Tamil Cinema Producers' Council President K.R.G.
and Film Distributors' Association President Chinthamani Murugesan, both
of whom had had earlier parted ways with each other because of some differences
of opinion on matters related to Cinema Industry, forgot their differences
and joined hands. Leading cinema personalities conveyed their blessings
to both of them!
Actress Anju married Kannada actor Prabagar. Later
she complained of ill-treatment and harassment and got divorce.
Vijayakanth presented 1 lakh rupees to the family
of Erode district fans' association president Brinda, who had passed away.
The marriage between the grandson of Gemini Ganesan-Savithri
named V.Arun Kumar and the daughter of Y.G.Mahendran called Madhuvanthi
took place in Chennai. At this function Rajinikanth and Jayalalitha happened
to meet each other on the same stage.
75 cine-world personalities like K.R.G., A.V.M.Saravanan,
actors including Vijai, Prashanth, Nepolian, Naassar, Manivannan, Raguvaran,
Thiyagu, Kumari Muththu, actresses like Meena, Roja and director Agaththyan
and the like personalities were announced as the awardees of State Government's
'Kalai Maamani' Award. Chief Minister Karunanidhi gave away those awards
at a function!
Rupees 5 lakhs worth of diamond jewel belonging to
actress Preetha was reported stolen at a shooting venue.
"Muththu" film acted by Rajini- Meena was screened

Tamilnadu Government appointed a committee under
the Presidentship of actor Sivakumar to select quality films produced on
low budget for getting government grant.
FEFSI and Producers' Forum which were functioning
as two different groups held frank talk in front of K.R.G., Chinthamani
Murugesan, K.Balachander and Bharathi Raja and came to be united as a single
entity. The serious problems which had had creeped in between them in the

Actor Ramki and actress Nirosha continue to live
as lovers. There spread a rumour that their marriage has already taken
place secretly. By way of giving an explanation, Ramki released a press
statement. In it he said: 'I will marry Nirosha openly. There's no need
to marry her secretly.'
K.R.G. and Chinthamani Murugesan combinely gave a
press interview. In it they said that from Diwali Day (1998) onwards, all
films must be released on percentage basis.

Police arrested actor Mansoor Alikhan who indulged
in sudden road-blocking demonstration protesting against the reported act
of telecasting "Vettu Onnu Thundu Rendu" film on Cable T.V.! Chinthamani
Murugesan released a press statement condemning video piracy and accepting
his request the theatre owners closed down theatres for one day in Pondicherry.
In appreciation of Chinthamani Murugesan's 37 years
service to cinema industry, a car worth rupees 9 lakh was presented to
him on behalf of Film Distributors. In the presence of A.V.M.Saravanan,
K.R.G. and Rajinikanth, the car key was presented to Chinthamani Murugesan
by "Dinakaran" Daily News Paper Managing Director K.Kumaran.
In an interview given by director Maniratnam, he
remarked: 'I welcome Rajini's entry into politics'.
The film "Titanic" ran for 300 days at Devi Bala
Theatre, Chennai. A youth by name Arumugam from Nellai, Tamilnadu rerceived
memento for having seen that picture 150 times. The memento was presented
at a function held at A.V.M. Garden, Chennai.
Actor Mansoor Alikhan acts as hero in the film "Kolai
Kolaiyaa Munthirikkaa". He started this film by projecting to the fore
the fox he himself is bringing up! There's a belief that the act of seeing
on the face of fox would prove to be a good omen!
The Eeezham lanquage films produced in Ceylon were
screened at Film Chamber, Chennai.
Rajinikanth formally announced about his new film
"Padaiyappa" in the presence of press reporters who had assembled at his
Poes Garden house, Chennai. In this film Sivaji Ganesan acts in the role
of a father. K.S.Ravikumar directs the film. Rajini also said that he would
start Arunachalam Educational Trust with the profit to be gained through

Sunder C. is getting postponed for two more years.
By way of felicitating Chief Minister Kalaignar Karunanidhi
for his 52years' contribution to Tamil cinema, entire Tamil filmworld people
joined together and conducted
a grand function in Chennai under the presidentship of Chevaliae Sivaji
Ganesan. All leading artists including Rajinikanth, Kamalhaasan, Vijayakanth
and Sarath Kumar and all technicians participated in it. In his presidential
address, Sivaji felicitated Karunanidhi recalling both of their past life-experiences
and cinema ventures which they happened to undergo, teaming together. Hearing
those remarks of reminiscence, Kalaignar Karunanidhi, who was seated on
the stage, began shedding tears and that scene emotionally captivated the
whole audience who were witnessing it.
At the function of "Cinema Pavazha Vizha", 6' high
silver statue and 52 pavun gold chain were presented. The function took
place at Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai.
Chevaliae Sivaji celebrated his 71st birth day. Kalaignar
Karunanidhi conveyed his blessings to him. When Sivaji met the press he

79 years old Gemini Ganesan married 35 years old

Hindi actresses Tabu and Sonali who participated
in a film shooting in Rajasthan forest area were arrested on complaint
that they shot down the forest deer.
The multi-crore English film "Gandhi" was dubbed
Hindi actor Salman Khan was arrested on charge of
having shot dead forest deer.
Mumbai court issued warrant to arrest actress Mamtha
Kulkarni on charge that she had acted obscenely.
The heroine of the film "Ilaignarani", Sonia, secretly
married Nagaraj, the director of the film "Kaathal Mannan".
Malayalam actress Manju Vaariyar loved and married
Malayalam actor Dileep. "Hereafter", so said Dileep, "she won't act in
Film producer Kovai Murugesan-Amutha marriage was
conducted by Chief Minister Karunanidhi.
Actor Vijayakanth's brother Prithiviraj-Hemalata
marriage was held in Chennai.
The inaugural shooting of Rajini's "Padaiyappa" took
place at A.V.M. Studio, Chennai. The scene in which Rajinikanth acted in
jeans dress get-up was picturised then.
For the sake of "Padaiyappa" film, Sivaji Ganesan
removed his 6 years old beard and Rajini his own (beard) which was one
and half years old! Both of them participated in that film's shooting in
Mysore and Chennai.
The films "Terrorist", "Oru Kan Oru Paarvai" and
"Unnidaththil Yennai Koduththen" were selected for screening at International
Film Festival scheduled to take place in Hydrabad.
Actor Ajith Kumar underwent surgery for the injury
on his backbone which (wound) was the result of an accident met with by
him while he happened to be a Motorcycle-race participant! After 2 weeks'
treatment he went to America.
'Padma Sree' Kamalhaasan's fans celebrated his birth

Actor Mansoor Alikhan, who with his wife and children,
tried to stage a fasting struggle demanding the release of Muslim yougsters
from jail, was arrested along with his wife and children. Mansoor and his
family members were released in the evening. While talking to reporters
Mansoor said that he would float 'Tamil Perarasu party', in the presence

'N.T.R. Award' was presented to Chevaliae Sivaji
Ganesan at a function held in Andhra. He was also honoured with 5 lakh
rupees cash prize by Andhra Pradesh Government.
Actress Banu Priya's husband Adarsh Gausal met with
an accident in America. Banu Priya immediately left for America.
Cinema State Awards for the year 1997 were announced
by the Tamilnadu Government. The film "Arunachalam" acted by Rajinikanth
and "Surya Vamsam" acted by Sarath Kumar were declared as Best Films, Vijai
(Kaathalukku Mariyaathai) and Parthiban (Bharathi Kannamma) were announced
as Best Actors, Meena (Porkkaalam) and Devayani (Surya Vamsam) were adjudged
as Best Actresses. Nepolian (Yedduppatti Raasaa) got Best Actor Special
Award and Best Actress Special Award went to Kushboo (Paththini). Chief
Minister Karunanidhi distributed the Awards at a special function. State
Governor Fatima Beevi, Rajinikanth and others participated in it.
Male baby was born to Nepolian-Jayasudha couple.
Actress Vaishnavi gave birth to female child.
Protesting against the Central Government's economic
policy, Tamilnadu Government and all parties conducted a 'bandh'. Mansoor
Alikhan who tried to conduct a struggle in a novel way by playing cricket
on the bandh day in front of Governor's residence was arrested and put
Rumours circulated that further production work of
multi-crore project "Maruthanaayagam" being acted in, produced and directed
by Kamalhaasan has been given up. When "Dinakaran" reporter approached
Kamal for the latter's comment, Kamal replied: "Maruthnaayagam" is not
simply a film. It's my very life. There isn't any second thought at all
to drop it. As I told before, I will finish it with the help of a foreign
