large percentage of legal immigrants enter under the family preference
categories. The following chart shows how the waiting times for these
categories has increased over the past 20 years.
1st Preference = Unmarried Adult (21 and older) Children of Citizens 2nd Preference A = Spouses and Minor Children of Permanent Residents 3rd Preference = Married Sons and Daughters of Citizens 4th Preference = Brothers and Sisters of Adult Citizens
amnesties for illegal aliens have greatly increased the number of
people applying to enter under these categories, and this is the
biggest reason the waiting times have increased. Thus amnesty for
illegal aliens actually decreases legal immigration, as
the amnestied illegal aliens and the relatives they sponsor crowd legal
immigrants out of these categories.
One sad result
of these increased waiting times is thousands of legal immigrants die
before receiving their permission to enter the US. For example, this
Pakistani woman recently wrote to us:
"My sister-in-law applied for our US immigration in 1996. But unfortunately my husband has died. I want to know that me and my childrens are eligible to get immigration." Ms. Masood
Since her husband was the primary sponsored person, now it will be very
difficult for them to immigrate to the US. In fact it is
estimated 10,000 immigrants die each year overseas waiting for a
green card to become available, they never even had the opportunity to set foot in the USA.
Illegal Alien Babies
Granting US citizenship to the US born children of illegal aliens is a
form of amnesty, since the Senators who wrote the 14th Amendment
clearly stated it "will not, of course, include persons born in the
United States who are foreigners, aliens". In other words they nor the
14th Amendment granted automatic US citizenship to illegal alien
babies, under a correct interpretation these babies would also be
But the Executive branch of the
US government has ignored this intent of the 14th Amendment and instead
decided to grant US citizenship to illegal aliens babies. It is
estimated 400,000 to 500,000 illegal alien babies obtain US citizenship
through this intentional misuse of the 14th Amendment. Some say this
practice is Unconstitutional: http://idexer.com/citizenship.htm.
Since this practice grants illegal aliens something the babies of legal
immigrants waiting overseas for an entry visa do not receive, it is
preferential treatment for illegal aliens, and puts them ahead of legal
immigrants. Consequently we oppose this practice, and support the
original intent of the 14th Amendment.
Orphan Children Overseas
There are many thousands of English speaking orphans like the ones below in orphanages overseas who have willing sponsors in the USA. But the US government puts many roadblocks in their way, keeping them from coming to the US for many years. Yet at the same time the US government lets illegal aliens and their children enter the US relatively easily across unsecured borders.
