ADARA RAINBOW SHAWL
Designed by elann
Simple to knit, this ripple pattern shawl uses the progressively toned
colors of elann.com Adara to create a summery rainbow of cheer.
30" long by 60" wide, after blocking.
18.5 sts and 24 rows = 4" on 4.5mm (US 7) needles. Gauge is not critical.
- 1 ball each of 12 colors of elann.com Adara
- 4.5mm (US 7) 39" circular needle
- two more 39" circular needles to act as st holders for 3 needle bind-off (size not critical)
- 27 rubber ring markers
Scalloped Lace Pattern: (Multiple of 9 +2)
Row 1: K1, *k1, yo, k2, sl 1 knitwise, k1, psso, k2tog, k2, yo* k1.
Row 2: P.
Row 3: K1, *yo, k2, sl 1 knitwise, k1, psso, k2tog, k2, yo, k1*k1
Row 4: P.
Row 5: K.
Row 6: K (Ridge Row).
Note: Place rubber ring markers between rpts.
Color Progression – 6 rows (1 rpt of rows 1 to 6) each of colors:
01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, then
11, 10, 09, 08, 07, 06, 05, 04, 03, 02, 01, 12, then
01, 02, 03, 04, then top edge in color 05.
With 4.5mm (US 7) needles, loosely CO 13 sts - 9 + 2, plus 2 selvedge stitches – for selvedges, k1tbl first stitch of ER, and sl1wyif the last st of ER.
Working back and forth across circular needle, knit 2 rows.
Begin working scalloped lace pattern, and color progression as above. Form triangle shape of shawl by CO 9 sts on either side of piece every 12 rows (every other 6 row rpt) as follows: every other row 5, CO 9 sts at beg of row, k across new sts, plus existing row 5 sts to end of row. Turn work, CO 9 sts at beg of next row 6, k across new sts, plus existing row 6 sts to end of row. Break yarn, begin next color.
Continue in this manner until last stripe of color 04 is complete, ending with a row 6. Hold all stitches on a 39" circular needle.
Top Edge Facing:
With color 05, and 4.5mm (US 7) 39" circular needle, CO 247 sts (27 rpts of 9 sts + 2, plus 2 selvedge sts).
Knit 2 rows.
Work rows 1-5 scalloped lace patt.
Hold all stitches on a 39" circular needle.
Join top edge to body of shawl using a 3-needle BO as follows: hold top of shawl on its circular needle, and top edge of shawl, on its circular needle, facing parallel, right sides together, wrong sides facing out in regular knitting position. Using a 4.5mm (US 7) needle, knit the first stitch from the front needle together with the first stitch from the back needle. Repeat for the second stitches. Pass the first stitch over the second as for a regular bind off. Knit third stitches together, bind off and continue until all stitches have been bound off.
Top edge will look like this, when blocked:
When worn, the top edge can be folded over to create a comfortable, scalloped, reverse stockinette facing, as below:
BO Bind Off, CO Cast On, ER every row, K Knit,
P Purl, patt pattern, psso pass slipped stitch over, R right, rpt(s) repeat(s), sl slip, st(s) stitch(es), tbl through back loop, tog together, wyif with yarn in front, yo yarn over.
