Earl series cut short

Seven is to wind up the second season of My Name is Earl on Thursday June 14.

But it will conclude the series early with Episode 17, "The Birthday Party" rather than Ep 23 "The Trial" which aired in May in the US.

The sitcom has been performing well for Seven, with regular audiences between 1.2 and 1.3m figure.

This year Seven started the series with the Season One finale "Number One" and attracted some criticism for playing episodes out of sequence last year.

Survey says...thanks for watching.

Friday is the final episode of Bert's Family Feud before the show is "rested." Now remembering that lots of shows are rested that never seem to return, I thought I would bring you a little flashback of the show from the 80s, when it was hosted by Daryl Somers.

It's still the same format, but the fashions are a lot browner, and the $8000 prize package includes Tosca leathergoods, modular bedroom furniture, a TEAC stereo system and a bus trip to Central Australia. "Wow," says Daryl.

Bert's Family Feud is replaced by Antiques Roadshow from Monday.

Meakin facing prison weekends

Peter Meakin, Seven's head of News and Current Affairs, is facing months of weekend prison detention following his sentencing in a NSW Court today.

Meakin, who had pleaded guilty of drink driving, could spend 14 months in periodic weekend lock-ups. He was also found guilty of dangerous driving and lost his license for eight years.

The magistrate said, "The defendant made a deliberate choice to proceed in his vehicle in a manner which he knew forced not one but two police officers off the road in efforts to avoid being pulled over for a random breath test."

Meakin apologised to his family, his employer and NSW road users. He has lodged an appeal against the sentencing. He was ordered to attend the Parramatta corrections facility on June 16 and to serve periodic detention until August.

Statement to all Seven Staff:

As everyone knows Peter Meakin was today convicted in Manly Local Court on drink driving and dangerous driving charges. There is an appeal pending and nothing should prejudge that.

Peter has during his time at the Network displayed enormous loyalty to the Network and achieved great things which are made clear to all by our leading position in News and public affairs programming. Loyalty is not a one way street. Kerry Stokes (whose reference was tendered in court) and I have expressed our support for Peter and we hope all members of staff will as well.

We do not underestimate the seriousness of the charges in expressing this support. Peter is his own harshest critic. He accepts full responsibility and feels deep contrition especially for the effect on his family.

I hope you will all join with me in showing your support for Peter at this difficult time. Peter himself has always said that we work in the full glare of scrutiny and that the highest standards are expected of us all.

Adam Richard fronts Bent TV

The 'fabulous Adam Richard' is to lead Melbourne community television group Bent TV for Channel 31.

Richard, known for his witty and flamboyant appearances on Rove Live, 9AM with David and Kim, The Glass House, Spicks and Specks and FOX FM radio, will become President of the gay and lesbian broadcasting group.

Richard hopes to help the group extend its volunteer base."My first duty as President of Bent TV is to commission a game show for myself to host," he said."Sticking to very strict Channel 31 budgets, the show will be called 1 vs 4 and contestants will battle it out for a Twix. I have taken on this role mainly because I would like people to refer to me, in the future, as Mister President Fabulous."

In his inimitable style the new "President
Fabulous" spoke candidly about opportunities for production volunteers. "It’s Channel 31 – we’re not promising miracles – but we’re also not promising celebrity dog training…"

Press Release:

With Eddie having boned himself from the top job at Channel 9, I have decided it is time for me to step up. I have accepted a generous invitation from Bent TV to become their President, and am hoping that within the next few months, I too will receive a thorough and welldeserved boning.

My first duty as President of Bent TV is to commission a game show for myself to host. Sticking to very strict Channel 31 budgets, the show will be called 1 vs 4 and contestants will battle it out for a Twix.

I have taken on this role mainly because I would like people to refer to me, in the future, as Mister President Fabulous. I also want to encourage people to join Bent TV as well as volunteer their services, but to be brutally honest, I’m in it for the title.

Long before I became “that annoying poof that’s always on the tv” I did a lot of work for community television, both for Bent TV and RMITV. Volunteering for community television is the most valuable grounding you can have to work in the industry. It is a chance to make all those mistakes that would ordinarily get you fired (hopefully so you can learn from them). It is one of my greatest thrills to turn up to a professional television production at a commercial television station, and see people both on and off camera making a living at something they once did voluntarily with passion and gusto.

Hopefully, as Mister President Fabulous I can help Bent TV develop the exceptional talent required to work in the demanding field of television. Producers, directors, camera operators, vision switchers, floor managers, editors, presenters, makeup, lighting – Bent TV is an inclusive environment staffed entirely by volunteers, all of them working toward making the best television we can manage. (It’s Channel 31 – we’re not promising miracles – but we’re also not promising celebrity dog training…) I am also hoping to attract sponsors to Bent TV – which is going to be a big ask, because the only thing I ever seem to attract is lint.

I look forward to talking to you more from my President’s chair. Although, I’m hoping to have a throne installed before I get boned.

Yours Sincerely,
Mister President Fabulous
Adam Richard.

First Review: Nerds FC

Last year’s observational series in which a team of “nerds” took on a champion soccer team stood out as one of the few reality-driven series that had a real affection for its participants. No voting out, no alliances, no twists –clearly Fremantle Media hadn’t read the “Reality 101” rulebook.

So successful was the Australian version of a Danish format that it has uncovered another 14 self-confessed nerds to put through the wringer once more.

This time our nerds, a bunch of boys aged 19 – 27, have an unhealthy predilection for mathematics, IT, physics, antique mobile phones, medieval history, Rubik’s Cube, climate change, sci-fi, scouts, Asian culture, robots, collectibles and an eco-nerd. One experiments with cross-dressing. Another actually has a girlfriend (the publicity notes claim this as an achievement).

Again the boys are uniformly unfit. Pseudo-Austen Powers music accompanies their clumsy attempts at kick to kick. Under the eyes of two coaches we are reassured that effort counts big time in this world. These boys aspire to form a unified force and overcome the singledom of being a nerd. And with the spirited tone of the show you want them to succeed.

The first episode sees the boys compete against a state under-11s champion team. It soon becomes clear where the nerds should and shouldn’t be placed on the field. The under 11s run rings around our nerds who huff and puff just to keep up.

But there is a lovely moment post-match when the nerds dazzle the kids with their mathematics skills, or unravel a Rubik’s Cube with a mesmerising flick of the wrist.

In a world of manipulative reality, it is this embracing tone that makes Nerds FC a warm and fuzzy weekly diversion.

Nerds FC premieres 7:30pm Saturday June 9 on SBS.
