RFU apply for two additional concerts at Twickenham Stadium in 2007

3rd  October 2006

The Rugby Football Union has applied for a variation to its planning permission to host concerts at Twickenham Stadium and wishes to increase the number of concerts from three to five in the calendar year 2007 only.

This step follows careful consideration and, subject to permission being given, is being put in place as a contingency measure in the event of Wembley Stadium not being available next summer. However, should the RFU be granted permission there is no certainty that five concerts will take place, but the RFU would have the flexibility to accommodate an additional two concerts should they become available.

It should also be noted that even with two additional concerts, the number of major events at Twickenham Stadium next year will not increase as there will be no autumn internationals in 2007 because of the Rugby World Cup in France.

The RFU has an excellent track record over the last four years in successfully hosting concerts. The capacity for any concert is 55,000 as opposed to 82,000 for a major rugby match. These concerts have proved to be beneficial to the local economy and popular with local residents with each concert held at Twickenham attended by up to 10,000 of the borough’s residents many having purchased discounted tickets.

To ensure the best possible management of any concert and to coordinate arrangements, the RFU hosts a concert day committee, attended by the police, transport authorities, representatives of the local community and Richmond and Hounslow councils.

As with previous concerts, the RFU’s sound consultants, local environmental health officers and council officers will be on site to ensure that any concert, sound checks and event management remain within the licence conditions.
