Middlesbrough to host annual gay pride event

Posted by Fiona - Administrator on January 15, 2008 11:26 AM |

MIDDLESBROUGH is to host an annual gay pride event following the success of last year’s Supergay Weekender.

StephenArmstrong-Ali.jpgOrganisers say the event will be bigger and better in 2008, and are already looking at venues for this year’s event, which will run from September 12 until Sunday September 14.

Last year’s event, which was the first of its kind in the town, was funded with a £2,000 grant from the Scarman Trust, a national charity which helps people bring about change in their community. Organisers hope to obtain more money for this year’s event, as Supergay is now a constituted organisation and can apply for funding.

“We got some good, positive feedback from the people who attended last year,” said Stephen Armstrong-Ali, pictured, one of the organisers.

“Everyone thought it was a really good idea and said, ‘can we have another one, please?’ We thought, if we could do one for £2,000, imagine what we could do with more money.

“We are normal, everyday people and we just want to celebrate life and who we are and have a safe place to do it.”

The Supergay team is looking for organisations and individuals willing to help run the event.

For more information, or to volunteer to help, contact Stephen Armstrong-Ali on 01642 804400 or Lesley Duggan on 01642 803607.
