Andy Baddeley rounded off a night on which Tirunesh Dibaba broke the women's world 5,000m record by winning the concluding event of the Oslo Golden League meeting, the Dream Mile, in a personal best of 3min 49.38sec. It was Britain's first victory in the showpiece event since Peter Elliott's in 1991.

At the age of 19, Kenya's Pamela Jelimo has run the 800 metres more than a second faster than 2004 Olympic champion Kelly Holmes ever managed – her time of one minute 54.99 seconds in Berlin on Sunday put her fifth on the all-time world list – and she could go faster still tonight when the Golden League caravan moves on to Oslo.

British athletics' Olympic prospects suffered two further blows at the weekend as Jessica Ennis pulled out halfway through the international heptathlon here because of an ankle injury and Nicola Sanders, the world 400m silver medallist, was reported to have given up the idea of competing in Sunday's Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, because of a knee injury.

Jessica Ennis sat on the lush infield of the Mösle stadium here yesterday in oppressive heat that was about to be dissipated by storm clouds rolling in over the mountains which surround this small but famous Austrian border town. In the relative calm before the coming storm of Beijing, this small but famous native of Sheffield was contemplating a weekend of activity that will offer a clear view of her Olympic ambitions.
