Queen of the South 2 Rangers 3: Boyd guides weary Rangers over finish line

Monday, 26 May 2008

In reverse order, here are the totals of competitive matches played by some of Europe's biggest clubs in 2007-08: Celtic (54), Internazionale (54), Lyons (54), Manchester United (56), Bayern Munich (57), Barcelona (58), Chelsea (60). And way out in front, Rangers, for whom Saturday's Scottish Cup final was a staggering – in more ways than one – 68th and final fixture of their campaign.

Queen of the South 2 Rangers 3: Boyd's the boy as Rangers end 10 days of torment on a high

Sunday, 25 May 2008

Kris Boyd put the Scottish Cup in the hands of Rangers for the 32nd time time yesterday, to prevent further pain for Walter Smith's side who thought another prize was slipping from their grasp when Queen of the South gave them the fright of their lives. Steve Tosh and Jim Thomson wiped out a two-goal deficit for the Scottish First Division side here early in the second half and even Boyd restoring the lead with 18 minutes left, did not quell Rangers' fears. "Queens" almost sent the final into extra time and who knows how Rangers would have coped with that after losing a title and the Uefa Cup final in the previous 10 days.

Queens dream of glory in first final

Saturday, 24 May 2008

The curtain comes down today on an extraordinary season for Scottish football with Queen of the South hoping to become only the second team from outside the top division to lift the Scottish Cup. East Fife did it in 1938, nobody since.

Dundee United 0 Celtic 1: Celtic hold their nerve to retain crown

Friday, 23 May 2008

Celtic were asked to honour the memory of Tommy Burns at Tannadice last night and they did so, clinching their third successive league title, if not with a flourish, then with a hard-fought but much-cherished victory. The green thousands who had made their way to Dundee celebrated as if a siege had been lifted and, emotionally, they clearly felt that way. This has been one long week and Celtic knew too well that this was a night that might also have belonged to Rangers.

Aberdeen 2 Rangers 0: Miller knocks stuffing out of weary Rangers

Friday, 23 May 2008

In the end it was just too much to ask that a former Scotland manager with a bit of Govan in his soul should triumph on a rollercoaster evening on two consecutive nights.

Weir enjoys pressure as Rangers face crucial night

Thursday, 22 May 2008

Rangers were on the brink of a historic quadruple and one of their greatest campaigns a few weeks ago. But David Weir is aware they will be branded failures if they do not wrest the Scottish Premier League title from Celtic's grasp tonight.

Celtic plan winning tribute to Burns

Thursday, 22 May 2008

The Celtic captain Stephen McManus is determined to pay a "tremendous tribute" to Tommy Burns by winning the Scottish Premier League.

Funeral not a factor in heavy Norway defeat, says Stark

Thursday, 22 May 2008

The Scotland Under-21 coach, Billy Stark, insists that the emotional turmoil of former friend and colleague Tommy Burns' funeral in Glasgow on Tuesday had no effect on his side's 4-1 defeat to their Norwegian counterparts at Rugby Park.

Smith's tilt at title remains in focus for finale

Thursday, 22 May 2008

Rangers may yet prove to be victims of their own success if they lose out on the Scottish Premier League title to Celtic on the final night of the season. But the manager Walter Smith says he will not look back upon an epic campaign with any regrets even if the SPL trophy does remain in the east end of Glasgow.

St Mirren 0 Rangers 3: Darcheville double takes the title race down to wire

Tuesday, 20 May 2008

For the third time in six seasons, an SPL title race between Rangers and Celtic will go to the wire. A trio of goals last night at Love Street from Kris Boyd, with the opener, and Jean-Claude Darcheville, twice, was not sufficient for Rangers to wipe out their goal-difference deficit on Celtic. But it was enough to take the SPL title race to a showdown evening on Thursday.
