Women catch up: Gender differences in learning programming concepts

DESCRIPTION: Murphy, L., Richards, B., McCauley, R., Morrison, B. B., Westbrook, S., and Fossum, T. (2006). Proceedings of the 37th SIGCSE Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education, pp.17-21. This paper describes a multi-institutional study to investigate gender differences in graduating computer science students’ learning and perceptions of programming concepts. Results indicated that female subjects had significantly less pre-college programming experience than their male counterparts. However, the authors found no correlation between previous experience and success in the major, as measured by computer science grade point average at graduation.

What is the Annals of Research on Engineering Education (AREE)?

  • A web portal which links education researchers and practioners across engineering domains and between engineering and other disciplines;
  • A discussion site for the community of researchers in engineering education and related disciplines;
  • A collection of structured summaries of education research articles published in our participating journals;
  • A collection of reflective essays on the process of doing education research; and
  • A community-developed collection of resources on education research.

Issue Features:

  • Each issue of AREE will feature one article and one resource. These are chosen to cover a wide range of topics and issues in education research over time.
  • Universities are focusing more attention on life-long learning (LLL) and self-directed learning (SDL), however, recent research indicates traditional academic structures may not effectively promote SDL/LLL.  This work investigates whether the Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s experiential Global Studies program is an effective vehicle for developing SDL and LLL.
  • The featured resource  is a web survey designed to obtain feedback from the engineering education research community and will help us make continuous improvements to AREE.
