CASTLE ROCK – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) closed State Route 504 (Spirit Lake Highway) today, January 29, starting by Bear Creek, at mile post 34, due to heavy snowfall over the last 24 hours. The closure will remain in place until WSDOT is able to safely clear the road and re-establish safe passage.
Crews are unable to plow beyond mile post 34 at this time, because there is no room to plow the accumulating snow without significantly narrowing the road, making it unsafe and impassable.
WSDOT closes a portion of SR 504 every winter, at Coldwater Creek, mile post 45, due to hazardous snow and ice conditions and the possibility of avalanches in some spots. It reopens in the spring after it is determined that no more significant snowfall will occur.
Drivers can now get real time traffic and weather information by dialing 5-1-1 from most phones. This new traveler information system builds upon the highly successful Washington State Highway hotline that managed 4.6 million calls each year. Callers can also use 5-1-1 to get statewide construction, mountain pass condition, and state ferry system information, as well as toll free numbers for passenger rail and airlines. TTY users can call 1-800-833-6388.
