queerupnorth is teaming up with Stonewall for an innovative new play tackling homophobic bullying in schools.
Almost two thirds (65%) of young lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils have experienced direct bullying. (The School Report, Stonewall, June 2007)
FIT is a groundbreaking new play for young people uniquely commissioned by queerupnorth and the leading gay equality organisation, Stonewall.
Written and directed by acclaimed writer/director, Rikki Beadle-Blair, whose credits include Bashment (Theatre Royal Stratford East), Stonewall (BBC Films) and Metrosexuality (Channel 4), FIT has been developed to help tackle the growing problem of homophobic bullying in Britain's schools, where everything from not liking sport to wearing the wrong trainers is ‘gay'.
Tegs and Jordan are best friends, the odd couple at the centre of everyone's gossip. Class jokers Ryan and Isaac can't shut up about who's gay and what's gay - one thing's certain, it ain't them. Lee and Carmel are a pair of feisty girls with a few secrets of their own. Stuck in the hothouse atmosphere of the college mini-bus heading to a dance contest, hormones run riot and truths tumble out as the group banter and bicker their way up the M1. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
Snappy dialogue and pacy writing more akin to Channel 4's Skins than your average theatre-in-education show combine with energetic hip-hop dance, original music and sparky comedy to make FIT a show that's entertaining for adults and young people alike.
FIT marks an exciting new development in queerupnorth's 16 year long history as:
- queerupnorth's first in-school education project
- queerupnorth's first national tour of a play
- a pioneering creative education collaboration between Stonewall, the UK's leading gay equality organisation and queerupnorth, Europe's premier lesbian and gay arts festival
FIT tours to the Glasgay! (Glasgow) and Homotopia (Liverpool) festivals, Contact (Manchester) and Drill Hall (London), and visits selected Secondary schools in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Bournemouth this autumn.
FIT has been created for Key Stage 3 (Years 7 - 9), specifically complementing various learning objectives from the National Curriculum, particularly PHSE and Citizenship.
