A Look at the Presidential Candidates

July 4, 2008 02:50 PM
This 4th of July, America celebrates its 232nd year of Independence, its break with the monarchy of England, and the start of a republic lead by a democratically elected president. In November, we will continue celebrating this democracy by electing our 44th president. Here are some historical and family photographs of each of the two major candidates (in alphabetical order), John McCain and Barack Obama. (23 photos total)

  1. Magnificent set. While I support Obama, I really like the fact that you have brought out the drama of Mr. McCain's service in the Army. He is a great man and nothing can take away from that; I just don't want him as our president.

This is possibly the best new blog of the year. You continue to astound me with these photos. Thank you.

These photographic biographies do an excellent job of showing that the two presidentially candidates are real people, who have lived real lives and are more than the symbols of opposing ideologies. When I saw the first picture, I expected to see the usual useless press photos, but these photos are far more revealing!

Where are the pictures of McCain's first wife, and the children he abandoned when he divorced to marry a woman 18 years his junior?

Where are the pictures of McCain during the Keating five scandal of the 1980s?

  1. Correction:

John McCain was not a fighter pilot

"A fighter pilot is a military aviator trained to engage other aircraft and typically pilots a fighter aircraft. Fighter pilots undergo specialized training in aerial warfare and dogfighting (close range aerial combat)."

John McCain flew A-4 Skyhawks almost exclusively for his entire military career. the A-4 is a light bomber aircraft, also known as the “Tinkertoy Bomber”. This is what he was in when there was the accident on the Uss Forrestal and this is the kind of plane he was flying when he was shot down and subsequently captured.

There was only one confirmed air to air kill involving the A-4 during the entire Vietnam War, and that was on May 1, 1967 by by LCDR Theodore R. Swartz with an unguided air-to-air missle.

These are not “fighter planes”, they are bombers. And John McCain was a “bomber pilot” not a fighter pilot.

  1. @Patrick

He is called the "first black president" of the harvard law review not because he is seen as more black than white... but rather that there had already been white presidents of the harvard law review.

What sense would it be to say, "First black--and 385th white--president of harvard law review!"

    Stop over-thinking the race issue.

  1. Obama represents disaster for our country. He represents and embraces
everything that's bad for our country. His Presidency will accelerate our decline
and insure a dependency class of Americans for generations to come. The
social engineering of our youth in the public schools for the past 40+ years has
deteriorated our value system to practically non-existence. That anyone would be
supporting Barrack Obama for President of the United States is a clear and present danger and clearly speaks to the moral decline of America. One can only hope and pray we, as a nation, will come to our senses before it's too late. I fear
    we are too late, already.

  1. fluffy.

while obama is certainly a stone fox, and McCain lends himself easily to GWB likenesses, please don't be diverted by these warm glimpses of candidates for an office which is purported to be the leader of the free world, because in fact, it doesn't have much real power:

In actuality, the members of the federal reserve (which by the way is not a government agency – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Reserve) and its controlling bank chairs are the current leaders of our country, and its foreign policy.
But please, don't simply consume, (or shun) this idea; please read up on it yourself.

A private bank (the fed) prints and sales our money to us, via the US Treasury, on which they (the fed) charge interest. The US Treasury then pays that interest by taxing labor (otherwise known as income tax). Before one dollar enters the economy it is already burdened with 4 cents of debt (current rate).

When banks and their chairs control the manufacture and distribution of money how much power does a politician truly have?

"If the American people ever allow private banks

to control the issue of their money,

first by inflation and then by deflation,

the banks and corporations that will

grow up around them (around the banks),

will deprive the people of their property

until their children will wake up homeless

on the continent their fathers conquered."

    - Thomas Jefferson (3rd President of the United States)

  1. The photo of McCain being "captured" neglects to mention one major point: Those vietnamese people clearly saved his life. With two broken arms and one broken leg, I don't think he would have been able to get to shore on his own.

Thanks for these photos - they do tend to humanize both men a bit more... for me, Barack's life is something I can identify more with - - the diverse, ground-level community feel of his life's focus before and after Harvard. My favorite photo of him is at the community center meeting...

Re: The McCain family - What is with a family naming all of its kids John, one after the other in succession? That seems really twisted to me - John I, John II, John III.... creeps me out a bit - like they obsess about creating mini-versions of themselves... In this sense, McCain seems stiff in many of the photos, as if he is shouldered with carrying on an official torch and stepping into line .... where Barack seems at ease with forging a very unique path - breaking new ground in Harvard and beyond... a path all his own.

  1. It seems to me that it will come down to a zero sum gain if either of these two are elected. Both are 'Privileged", both are Senators , both are either extreme leftist like Obama or a closet liberal like McCain. Both are dangerous in policy areas that will effect the long term economic health of this nation. A long term example ex Pres. Carters policies robbed us of assets like the Panama canal or effected the education of our children by starting the Dept of education which has tampered with children's education to the point that now we have some of the worst schools in the world. Like I said all we will get is more of the same idiocy ........nothing will change and only fools believe it will considering who's running for President.... God help us. "" I enjoyed the pictures none the less.""

  1. Interesting collection of photos though it is impossible, especially at this point, to produce any kind of objective view of either candidate. People will always complain about something excluded or included.

#53 I doubt they saved his life, ignoring the fact that they beat and stabbed him after getting him to shore, he managed to survive for several days of interrogation after that before reaching any kind of medical care. If he had crashed away from a population I assume a rescue team would have picked him up within hours. And he is being captured, they're certainly not trying to save him, to them he was a symbol to be attacked.

You can not expect wisdom and no criticism with all these "firsts"...

The photos of Obama are amazing as well. I especially love the last one. That's a great photo.

As for the arguments lawyer or soldier; and which provides better experience. The fact is more presidents have been lawyers, over 26, I believe. So obviously, being a lawyer is ample training ground for the presidency.

Besides, being a soldier, or even a war hero doesn't provide you experience for being president, despite how romantic or heroic it may sound. There are plenty of war heroes and while we should thank them all; I'd have to say most of them would make no better president than the multitude of lawyers would.

Perhaps 26 Presidents have been lawyers. But I beleive all Presidents except for Clinton have served in the Military.

  1. I guess what i see in these pics is McCain, who always seems so intense, and Obama, who always seems cool calm and collected (accept in the dodgem while entertaining his daughter (she is so cute). But both men have come a long way, and I am looking forward to change, am a retired military man, and so dang tired of old men waging war, and young men dying for that purpose.

The lessons of Vietnam, Korea, never learned, and good men die, whilst the draft dodgers make money on the war. What a waste

I dont dislike McCain, but i know I dont want him sounding the call of war again. Diplomacy, tact, talk, and walk

  1. You all have good minds and excellent way to get info...the WEB use it to become true american respecting the responsibility to use the vote for what is best for the country. The vote should be for such a person who exibits leadership, moral ethical traits, ability to listen and a dose of humility. Look back at your leaders who did well and learn.
McCain was 894 out of 899 graduate at the naval academy..it reflects ineptitude and lack of application for the good furtune he had to be accepted. Father in the navy helped, not his grades.
Obama graduated from Harvard MAGNA CUM LAUDE, highest honor.
He studied Constitutional law because as he said in his patriotic speech on June 30 2008 in Independence MO...can find it on his site--- what makes America what it is comes from the constitution and the american people who uphold it everyday.
People, you need to study your history well and uphold our values and our liberties with respect and awe if you want to keep this country great.
The leaders are only as good as the people demand.
McCain has neither the qualities of a leader not the morals, not to mention the clarity of mind and purpose it requires to be a president.
Obama has proven his ability to be a leader, he is leading an army of volunteer in the country already.
Face reality and give credit where it is due.

  1. Interesting the pictures of Senator McCain serving his country. Looks like he has been serving for most of his adult life. None of Senator Obama serving though. He's been serving himself looks like.
It's very scary that people will vote for him because he is a nice looking guy, can't take that away from him, and that he speaks very well. He can get a crowd going but is there anything behind what he is saying??? Something to ponder to say the least.
Experience says alot and Senator McCain has it all over Obama.
As far as Iraq, we can't just "pull out" of there. That would be dangerous and irresponsible. We have to finish what we started and if you talk to any military men & women who have come back they will tell you we are doing a good job over there.
I'll use my vote as a vote for experience. Go McCain, show them who's got it come November

  1. @ 67 - he actually does know how to be bipartisan, and practices it. In fact, he's been criticized before (by Democrats) for being too chummy with politicians across the aisle, which I think is ridiculous. He knows better than they do that that's the only way to work.

And the best thing is, he actually manages to get stuff done with that pluralistic attitude. Check out who he works with in the Senate, dummy.

@ 65 - I'm sorry, who authorized the Patriot Act? Who decided to track which library books you were checking out? Who thought it was a great idea to take away any kind of checks and balances on the executive branch? And who has been listening in on our phone calls? Try again.

Obama is someone I can trust.

It's time we broke the notions that in order to be President, you have to have executive experience, Washington experience, and have served the country in a military aspect.

  1. When will people realize that electing Obama is the best thing for the country????
It's similar to when a medical team has to induce a patient into a near death coma in order to have any chance to cure them. If you think things are bad now, wait until this shady, no experience, snake oil salesman and the huge political machine behind him (don't think for a second that all this money is coming in 5.00 at a time from idealistic college kids) has had 4 years to work his 'change' on the nation, with the unbridled support of Pelosi & company! Believe me, I'm no Bush fan, and McCain doesn't thrill me either, but if Obama wins, we'll all soon be fondly looking back on 4.00/gallon gasoline, affordable heath care, low interest rates, a 45%+ percent personal tax burden, etc. Maybe THEN people will wake up......
And by the way, remember the good ol' Carter years of apologizing for being American to every corrupt, two bit country around the world while giving them billions in aid? Obama & his 'First Lady' are already showing signs of the 'I'm sorry America is so prosperous, we'll try to become more third world for you all' doctrine......
So please show how 'progressive' or 'trendy' you are and vote Obama in November, because you will definitely be a part of history....just not the way you imagined.
And yes, I know because I am of the opinion that Obama is a thin skinned, devious, opportunistic phony, who is not even remotely qualified for the office, that makes me a 'mean spirited racist'....oh, well......

McCain a former POW can offer a first hand perspective on the usage of war tactics. Obama, a human rights activist can show great compassion for this country.

  1. You know, a few weeks ago I had a great dislike for Obama and would not have voting for him for anything, because I didn't like the way he took Senator Clinton out. However, I'm beginning to like him more and more.

I'm a Clinton backer; but now that she's out, I believe I'll move over to Obama, especially after seeing him in the bumper-car with his daughter Sasha. The expression on his face is playful, but don't be fool he's going to bump McCain right out of the election and become the champ.

The pictures of him in real life changed my mind. I feel now that I know who Obama is; and I like what I see. Yes We Can!

McCain Is just not up to the par for the job, he has not gusto.

Does this disturb anybody else? Should a presidential candidate's office be displaying a flag honoring a radical revolutionary who sought the destruction of the United States?

I suspect that these well meaning but ill informed folks have no idea who Guevara really was. They only know that he was a leader of a revolution and, to them, revolution is cool. Similarly, many Obama supporters are unable to site specific policies that they like, They simply like the idea of change, even without knowing what that change may be.

  1. Does it really matter how many presidents had war service or not...? I mean, the infantry is taught to point, shoot and think in their feet. Do we want some decisions to be rushed by a PRESIDENT? I mean, think about this; President, should we pull out of iraq? (immediately after) Hell to the yes. I know people will be against that example, but would you rather remain incognito, or destroy a culture? This isn't just bystander/upstander, this war is protection of a people. Our military planners didn't mean it to be that way, but that's pretty much what's going on right now. If we pulled out, who would stop the terrorists? This ain't WWII, they don't fight nice and clean. We are pretty much the only ones with any combat experience against terror tactics, which we were prepared for by Desert Storm/Shield. My major point is, however, military service is not appropriate experience for a presidency. While your a president, your job isn't to shoot your secretary. It's to make decisions to help your people.

  1. Wonderful comments which reflect to me how we are able to enjoy our freedom of speech. I am a woman, who was astonished that the political machines were able to arrange things so that the Democratic race was divided between a woman and a black man. I believe that this was contrived. I'm also astonished that the news media and others have not picked up on Senator McCain's decision to divorce his first wife and marry a younger, blonde haired woman. I and probably a million other women are in that same place. I am confident that the gains made by Hilary Clinton will not be ignored and that our time for leadership is close at hand. However, I will not disrespect the Senator's first wife by voting for him, or Hilary by not voting for Barak Obama. His books were exceptionally well written and I invite all to read them as I did. He is a good man, qualified enough to be President? I believe the qualifications you need are motivation to do your best work possible (he has), a willingness to reach back and help others from a successful place (he has) and a true spiritual belief in the generosity and goodness of the American people. I believe that he has that plus compassion to do everything he can to help (with others) heal this red and blue divided nation. We are one nation, under God, may be all be blessed to be grateful and vote with our hearts. Amen.

Because he knows how brutal they can be. Terrorist are Terrorists. If Obama can have a bumper car battle with a high power from another country to settle disagreements great. Being president is serious. McCain knows the system. He has been in it for decades. He can get things done. My GOD how much he gave to his country and still kept giving!!! Anyone else would have coward back after coming home and probably been a broken mess. Who would blame them after that. But he didn't. That is his character. I think his being older is an asset. He has experience in the areas that count and as you get older you get wiser. On a shallow note, When he was young he was way better looking too. I would rather a president who really knows what he is doing. He is no bush.

  1. This country is in danger of chasing a mirage. We are so desperate for change that we will take ANY change, no matter what form it comes in. Obama is no different than any other politician...he will say he what he needs to get elected. The real test? Check these guys voting records in the Senate. THAT should give you a good idea of: 1) are they party loyalists/extremists, 2) can they work across party lines, 3) what kind of votes have they had to cast and what is the severity of the situations and the consequences of their votes? There are many more questions, but when you look up their records, McCain is simply more experienced, has not voted solely along party lines (Obama is quite the party voter) and has been involved with some major pieces of legislation, both good and bad. To me, his experience and his track record serving this country trump Obama's.

In a country that is pleading for moderate politicians, I am stunned with the amount of love Obama is getting. McCain is more of a moderate than Obama. He's not a pure moderate, more of a moderate-right, but definitely not a conservative extremist.

The choice is clear: Do you want 4 more years of partisan politics? Do you want a massive liberal shift in our countries principles and laws? Or do you want someone who has proven he can work with BOTH sides, for YEARS, and get the JOB DONE?

McCain is your guy. But, I fear Obama will win...he's a better speaker, he's younger, and he looks better....of course there are other superficial ways of judging the next president, but this will win out.

McCain is a hero and would make a great president! He's got my vote!

Beside serving his Country as a Pilot, and a hero, he also has served the senate for many years...Barack is only a child compared to McCain, who would only hope to be half the man McCain is. Don't make yourself fell good voting for a Black president just to make history if he is not fit for the job...and Barack is clearly NOT fit to be president! maybe in 10 years wehn he gains some REAL experience...experience that counts...not an "accomplished writer", or a "good teacher", or a "great speaker"...that's NOT experience!

Having served in the military as a female officer- i know alot of enlisted and officer soldiers that do not understand why we are there PERIOD! For the camera, we are taught to lie and say we support our Commander in Chief- Presd. Bush, when we clearly DO NOT! Why don't you enlist in the military and go serve in Iraq, i beat your mind would change then. McCain is not worthy of being the next president of the US, with his corny jokes he tells...and he has no morals and lack character. I hate the fact that he left is 1st wife and children while she waited on his return and had an extra -martial affair with Cindy McCain, while still married to his 1st wife!

Let's say Obama was a surgeon rather than a lawyer. Would you allow him to operate on you or someone in your family with 143 days experience? Or would you opt, instead, for someone who has 26 years experience? Surely we are not electing a President of the most powerful nation in the world because he is in a bumper car with his daughter!

Also, lets not forget JM's 26 years in Congress. Don't fool yourself into believing that a smooth talking lawyer is actually capable of running this country with very little, to NO first hand experience. Also, I didn't see the pictures of Obama with his cousin Odinga trying to bring Kenya as a country under Shia(muslim) Law. Also, this picture needs to be included, http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/anthem.asp It seems that all the others know the US Flag Code, maybe Obama misunderstood the exemption of "those in uniform", it means Military Uniform, but then again, he doesn't have one!

But so were many others, and many others are still being tortured. This does not make someone automatically "President" material. Obama is saying "change" with no definers. McCain is saying "more of the same". Americans are still under the illusion that we are the only people on this planet so are having trouble understanding that the gasoline crisis is due to increased demand from China and India.
