Canada's largest mosque under construction

Manu Chugh Architects act as local architect for the largest mosque in Canada

Illustrating the cultural diversity of Canada, Calgary, the oil capital and the fastest growing city in the country, will soon be home to one of North America's largest mosques. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is spending $15 million on approx. 48,000 SF mosque on a site in the northeast quarter of the city. The complex will be an Islamic centre featuring a prayer hall, multi-purpose hall, library, exhibition area, classrooms, kitchen, dining, and administrative areas. It provides equal facilities for men and women. The complex also includes a residence for the Imam. The building will feature a beautiful, large stainless steel dome and a 97-foot minaret. The conceptual design of the project was developed by Himayat Masood under the supervision of Naseer Ahmad, Community's Director of Mosque Projects, in 2002. Manu Chugh Architects is acting as the local architect in Calgary. Ellis Don, one of the largest construction services companies in Canada, is working as Construction Managers for the complex. The experience of building the mosque has helped Ellis Don understand the unique architectural and design features addressing various cultural and religious needs of Muslims living in a Western country. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a global Muslim organization, established in over 180 countries with millions of followers, is the most progressive sect of Islam in modern history. It was founded in 1889 in India by Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who claimed to be the promised reformer of the modern age as foretold by Prophet Muhammad. The community, which has already built a landmark Mosque in Toronto area in 1992, is looking forward to start praying in the new Mosque in summer of 2008.
