SUMMARY
- Australia’s net greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors totalled 576.0 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2-e) in 2006 under the accounting provisions applying to Australia’s 108% Kyoto emissions target.
- Emissions in 2006 were 4.2% above 1990 levels.

(a) Carbon dioxide equivalent, CO2-e, provides the basis for comparing the warming eff ect of diff erent greenhouse gases.
(b) 2006 estimate is interim only and will be revised once National Carbon Accounting estimates become available.
(c) Removals from plantations established since 1990 in the commitment period 2008-2012 based on projections in DCC
Tracking to the Kyoto Target 2007.
(d) Strictly speaking the net credits from land use change and forestry should only enter the account during the fi rst
commitment period (2008-2012). Their inclusion in the 2006 Inventory helps our understanding of Australia’s emissions in
relation to the Kyoto emissions target which is estimated to be 597 Mt each year over the first commitment period.
- The greenhouse gas emissions intensity of the Australian economy, expressed as emissions per dollar of GDP, has declined over the period 1990 to 2006 by 37.3% from 1.0 to 0.6 kg CO2-e.
- Australia has reduced its emissions per capita over the period 1990 to 2006 by 13.8% from 32.6 to 28.1 tonnes CO2-e.
- Based on International Energy Agency and Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change estimates, Australia’s share of world emissions was around 1½ per cent in 2006.
