Mean Green Set to Take on the Midshipmen

The Mean Green(1-7,1-4)have a home Game this weekend against the Navy Midshipmen(5-4) for a 3 PM matchup at Fouts Field.

North Texas knew they would have a good game on their hands when they put Navy down on their schedule, this storied program has history and tradition attached to its name. The game promises nothing less now, as the Mean Green are focused on closing out the season strong and denying Navy there automatic bowl bid.

The Mean Green should also be fired up for this game, as it will be well publicized throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Area and could very well be one of the highest attended games in recent years.

The focus for this game will be if Head Coach Todd Dodge can keep his team fired up for the entire game. The team seems to have had a problem keeping their intensity up for four full quarters, preventing North Texas from posting more wins. So, with all that being said, here is the rundown.

The Mean Green are coming back from a bye week in which the team had a chance to sit down and really take a look at what has and what hasn’t worked these past few weeks. I look forward to seeing more improvement from this bye week, seeing as how last time we had a week off, the team was able to establish a good running game with the time off. I hope to see the team come out focused in both halves of the game and not let up until the final whistle blows. One of the good things that North Texas has for this game is the fact that Navy comes into the game with one of the worst pass defenses in D-1 football, something Giovanni Vizza will happily exploit. Expect Casey Fitzgerald and Brandon Jackson to get the ball very often. North Texas should be able to also establish a ground game, but it seems like the ground game always get stalled after halftime. If UNT is able to consistently move the ball on offense and score every time they have the ball, they should be able to offset Navy’s potent running attack.

Navy is going to run. Everyone knows it. The problem is stopping the ground attack. Navy’s three headed option rushing attack should cause problems for the North Texas defense if they aren’t focused for the entire game. Led by Quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada, who has 702 rushing yards, he can also pitch out to his running backs Eric Kettani, and Adam Ballard, who have 627 and 456 yards rushing, respectively. Our linebackers can expect a lot of work this game trying to cover all the options this running attack will try to exploit. Navy, coming off of their thrilling triple-overtime win against Notre Dame showed some grit with their ability to hang tough.

All in all this game should be one of the most exciting games in Denton in the past few years, if you aren’t coming out to this game I hope that you reconsider and give it a chance.

Quick Hits:

North Texas has yet to score on the opening drive of any game this year.

Giovanni Vizza has become the all-time passing leader for freshman quarterbacks at UNT, he has already thrown for 1295 and still has four games left on the schedule

The Mean Green rank 12th Nationally in passing yards per game, posting 297.9, and is on pace to break the school mark for most passing yards in a season.
