AFL, NRL & S14 Review

2006-10-06 14:58:00 GMT

With AFL and NRL now in hibernation, it is well and truly time to take a look back on the performance of FF V5 this year. At the conclusion of the home-and-away fixtures for each of AFL, NRL and Super14, the tipping summary was as follows:

I expect FF to exceed the human average, so these results at least meet that expectation. In that sense, it's a satisfactory performance. Nonetheless, I'm still a little disappointed with the AFL and NRL performance. I certainly aim for a slightly more convincing result.

It would be disingenuous of me to suggest that FF was just plain unlucky this year. However, it certainly felt that way on the odd occasion. The Round 19 and 23 clashes between Wests Tigers and Canberra will live long in the memory, with FF having picked the Wests Tigers underdogs by a point in both games, only for Canberra to win by a solitary point in one game, and by a couple in the other. Those two results certainly fell into the heartbreaker category. Naturally there were plenty of other hard luck stories. And naturally I don't so easily remember the close ones that fell FF's way.

In any case, I've recently taken delivery of another shipment of articial intelligence and modelling books from Amazon. I don't know if they will help me to squeeze better performance out of FF, but I am certain that they will help me to spend an inordinate amount of time in front of my computer. Another summer of discontent on the way. Hopefully the NFL picks go well in the meantime.
