What Makes Canada Cool?
Nanaimo British Columbia is the official Bathtub Racing Capital of the World
Nanimo Bath Tub Race
Nanaimo, Vancouver Island - See one of the coolest and craziest races in the world - the INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BATHTUB RACE. It started as a ‘Centennial Event’ in 1967 with 200 craft starting and 47 completing a 57-km (36-mile) race to Vancouver. Today, the course begins and ends in Nanaimo, with 'tubbers' coming from as far as Australia, and spending an estimated minimum of $3000 to create their bathtub boat entries. The race is now the main attraction of Nanaimo's annual July four-day Marine Festival, which also includes a 'kiddies karnival', beer gardens, sail past parade, and Vancouver Islands' biggest summertime fireworks display. Nanaimo is also the start/finish for the June Cadillac Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race which circumnavigates Vancouver Island. Photo courtesy of the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society.
