Addison Gallery Rendering

The Addison Gallery of American Art is among the most admired museums in the country. Renowned for our collection composed exclusively of American art and for our ambitious exhibition, publishing, and education programs, the Addison has been part of Phillips Academy since the museum first opened in 1931.

Founded by the visionary philanthropist Thomas Cochran, the Addison serves not only the Phillips Academy community – students, faculty, alumni, and parents – but also the regional, national, and international art-going public. The museum’s gracious and historic building offers an intimate setting for public engagement with art.

Though the Addison has developed a strong reputation as a world-class museum, in recent years we have outgrown our physical space. Indeed, since its founding, the Addison’s physical space has not changed, yet the collection has increased from 600 to more than 16,000 objects and full-time staff has grown from 3 to 17. Lack of space compromises our mission and our ambitions for the future. The existing building desperately needs renovation.

In 2004, Brian Allen became the sixth Addison director. Building upon the vision of previous director Adam Weinberg, the Trustees of Phillips Academy, the Addison’s Board of Governors, supporters, and staff worked in consultation with the firm Machado & Silvetti to develop a rationale and strategic plan for expansion.

In spring 2006, the Phillips Academy Board of Trustees approved a $30 million campaign to allow the Addison to achieve the goals presented here. Of that figure, $22 million will be dedicated to capital costs and $8 million will support endowment.

As we enter the next phase of this endeavor, we are partnering with Centerbrook Architects to develop an expansion and renovation plan that will sustain the Addison for years to come. Centerbrook has extensive expertise in museum projects and has proposed to create an elegant, modern addition that will work harmoniously with the historic building’s beautiful façade.
