Whedon's Dr. Horrible Almost Done

Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon told SCI FI Wire that he's just about completed Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, a nearly 40-minute online musical that he wrote and directed. The Web project stars Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion (Serenity) and Felicia Day.

"It's about a low-rent supervillain [Harris as Dr. Horrible] who's trying to get into the Evil League of Evil and defeat his nemesis, Captain Hammer [Fillion] and work up the nerve to talk to the pretty girl at the laundromat [Day]," Whedon said in an interview while promoting his upcoming Fox series Dollhouse last week in New York. "It's an idea I had a while ago, that I thought would be just right for a weird little Internet venture. I wrote it with my brothers [Zack and Jed Whedon] and my brother [Jed's] fiancée [Maurissa Tancharoen] and somehow got the best actors I know to just jump in, which was very scary for all of us."

Whedon created Dr. Horrible during the recent writers' strike. "We got this amazing crew," he added. "Everybody just sort of said, 'We'll just jump on,' and in six days we shot this 36-minute, three-part oddity, which I think is the most fun I've had in about seven years."

The next step, Whedon said, will be to find a venue to air Dr. Horrible so that it can earn its money back and he can pay the crew. "We're literally just finishing it," he said. "And then we're going to show it to my people at CAA and a bunch of other people and discuss 'How do we go about this? Where is the venue for this?'" Whedon anticipates that Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog will appear first on the Internet, followed by releases on iTunes and DVD. --Ian Spelling
