Pandora: Gray goes onthe attackover Hytner's 'easyliberalism'
Wednesday, 30 July 2008
It's been a while since our last great theatrical row, so thank heavens Simon Gray has decided to liven up London's theatreland a little.
Thomas Sutcliffe: All human life is just a 999 call away
Tuesday, 29 July 2008
I nearly called 999 the other day. Getting up early to pick my wife up from the airport, I noticed two central-casting ne'er-do-wells shuffling along the road apparently testing car door handles, while looking about them in much the way you would do if you were playing charades and had drawn the word "furtive".
Pandora: Bale won't need to hurry back
Tuesday, 29 July 2008
It's probably safe to say that screen Batman Christian Bale couldn't leave London quick enough last week. And the actor, who was quizzed over an alleged assault on his own family, won't need to hurry back.
Miles Kington Remembered: 'This witness seems to be off his trolly, m'Lud'
Monday, 28 July 2008
You can always get NHS things if you want to. They're so desperate for cash they're flogging stuff off. That's why they're so short of beds. They keep selling them
Pandora: Aitken's university challenge
Monday, 28 July 2008
Not long after Jonathan Aitken emerged from prison, looking considerably humbled and a few pounds lighter, he decided to return to his studies.
Dom Joly: Daddy's little jumper – it seems to run in the family
Sunday, 27 July 2008
My daughter stood, frozen, on top of the cliff. It was about a 20-foot drop down into the dark waters of Lake Joe and this would be the biggest jump of her life so far. From our speedboat below, her mother was screaming: "Don't let him force you to do it. You don't have to do anything you don't want to ..." Parker turned towards me. "Do you think I should do it, Dad?"
Dylan Jones: If you ask me
Saturday, 26 July 2008
If you ask me Paul Smith's furniture shop in Albemarle Street is potentially the most dangerous shop in London. Especially after lunch. And especially after two glasses of wine. Or, on that very rare occasion, usually sometime during August, possibly three.
The Weasel: A spectacle of myself
Saturday, 26 July 2008
The striking depiction of the Weasel by Lucinda Rogers that illuminates this column on a weekly basis is, of course, an impeccably accurate likeness of the author. But if compelled to make a criticism of my likeness I might point out that the specs are wrong. I went through my John Lennon phase over two decades ago. Though fine for the sardonic Scouser's beaky nose, they didn't do much for the Weaselian features, even with the oh-so-cool (or so I thought) amendment of a blue tint to the lenses. After that, I had a brief flirtation with contact lenses. This was even less of a success since the soft lenses failed to correct my astigmatism. "Have you ever considered wearing glasses with your contact lenses?" inquired the ophthalmologist. Whenever I've told the story to opticians they find nothing amusing in it at all.
