Major General Mick Slater, DSC, AM, CSC
Head Defence Personnel
Mick Slater is the Head of the Personnel Executive in Defence. He was born in Brisbane and after completing his education at St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace, worked and studied through Queensland University of Technology. In 1978 he joined the Australian Army.
Following officer training at the Officer Cadet School Portsea, Major General Slater undertook a variety of infantry regimental and instructional appointments in the 8th/9th Battalion and the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment; at the Infantry School; and at the Combined Arms School, Canada. Additionally, he has held staff appointments in Headquarters of the 3rd and 9th Brigades and Army Headquarters.
Major General Slater has commanded at all levels from platoon to brigade level. His operational commands have included the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, and the 3rd Brigade on operations in East Timor. Also he served as an operations staff officer in the United States 3rd Army Headquarters in Kuwait on Operation POLLARD.
Major General Slater’s senior staff appointments have included Director General Preparedness and Plans, Director General Personnel and Director General Intelligence Support to Operations. Additionally, he served as an Inquiry Officer on the Burchett Inquiry into Military Justice in the Australian Defence Force.
He has undertaken formal education in mobilisation planning in the USA, and is a graduate of Command and Staff College Fort Queenscliff, the Joint Services Staff College, and
the United States Army War College. Major General Slater holds Masters’ Degrees in Strategic Studies and Business Administration.
Major General Slater is married to Danielle and has three adult children.
