ASAHI Net with Windows 3.x
If you are reading this, either you are already
connected, in which case this is nothing but Windows dressing, or you are
looking at this file on a friend's machine. Either way, this is an explanation
of how to connect a Windows 3.x computer (Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1, or
3.11) to ASAHI Net. |
In order for your setup to work, you must have:
|
Connecting
to ASAHI Net with Trumpet Winsock
Where
to download it
Download it from the USA (probably the quickest way): ftp://ftp.trumpet.com/winsock/twsk30d.exe
Download it from Australia (slower, but still good): ftp://jazz.trumpet..com.au/winsock/twsk30d.exe
Installing
Trumpet Winsock (if you just got it, or have
never used it before)
- Create a folder on your C: drive called Trumpet. If you download
Trumpet Winsock from the Internet, save the file twsk30c.exe (or
twsk30d.exe, whichever version you have) in the Trumpet folder. Select
Run... from the Program Manager, and run c:\trumpet\twsk30c.exe
to uncompress Trumpet. Then select Run... again, and run c:\trumpet\install.exe.
If this is the first time you have installed any internet software, you
can answer yes to any questions it asks about updating files.
- When you first install Trumpet Winsock, it will ask you to fill out
some information. Please fill it out as written below. (If you are merely
reconfiguring a version of Trumpet you already have installed, please skip
to "Setting up Winsock for PPP.")
- In the Trumpet Winsock Setup screen (the first window you will
see), fill out the following information, as indicated in the graphic you
see here. Enter the following values:
|
- IP address: 0.0.0.0
- DNS server: 202.224.32.1
- Domain suffix: asahi-net.or.jp
- Select PPP.
- Leave Vector, Netmask, and Gateway at their defaults.
- We advise you to leave Demand load timeout, MTU, TCP
RWIN, TCP MSS, and TCP RTO MAX alone. These values can
be tailored to suit your needs once you have things running, but you should
be able to establish a connection using the default values indicated here.
|
- When you are finished, click the button marked Dialler Settings...
in order to go to the following screen:
- Select the COMM port your modem is on.
|
|
- Set Online Status Detection to DCD (RLSD).
|
- Set Hardware handshaking and VJ header compression as required. Hardware
handshaking is recommended if your modem and modem cable support it. Under
PPP, header compression is optional and recommended.
|
- Click OK to return to the Trumpet Winsock Setup screen,
then OK again. Restart Windows, so all the changes can take effect.
|
- After you restart, double-click the Trumpet Winsock icon to launch
the program. From the File menu, select PPP Options.... You
will see the window indicated below. Click on the box next to Password
Authentication Protocol (PAP). Then, type your UserID and password
as indicated (your password will appear only as asterisks, for security
reasons). Click on the OK button.
If you see the windows for Modem Settings and Server Settings,
you can leave those at their defaults, and just press OK for both
of them.
- Then skip ahead to Logging in for
the First Time.
Setting

but need to configure it for ASAHI Net)

Select PPP.

for security reasons). Click on the OK button. |
You should now be ready to try logging
in for the first time. For more information about the options you've
set, please see the Trumpet Winsock help files covering the File/Setup
and Dialler/Settings screens.
Logging
in for the first time
- There are two methods of connecting to ASAHI Net: manual and automatic.
A manual login involves entering the modem commands and server commands
each time you wish to accesses the Internet. Automatic logins are a feature
of Trumpet Winsock which allow you to configure login scripts that automate
the manual login process.
- We highly recommend that you log in automatically using ASAHI Net's
preconfigured Trumpet Winsock login script (click
here for the script, which you can cut-and-paste right from these pages
-- you can also download it from the BBS conference english/library). Save
the script by copying it to your clipboard. Then, select Edit scripts
from the Dialler menu. Double click login.cmd. Erase the
default login.cmd file you see, and replace it with the ASAHI Net login.cmd
(you can just paste it in). Save the file, and then exit to return
to Trumpet Winsock.
- Run the ASAHI Net login script (login.cmd) by selecting Login from
the Dialler menu. The first time it is launched you will be asked
to enter your username, password, and phone number.
Enter these as indicated in the graphic below. (You can change these later
by selecting Profile from the Dialler menu.)
Press OK to start your login process. A whole bunch of information
will appear in the window, but the key message is one saying My IP address
is..., and then lists some numbers. If this appears, then you have
successfully connected via PPP. You can now launch Netscape, Microsoft
Internet Explorer, Eudora, or some other Internet program. Happy surfing!
- If you receive Script aborted (possibly proceeded by another
error message), or if you receive a message PPP enabled, but not
the My IP address is... message, you are NOT connected via
PPP. Review your settings, make sure your User ID and password are correct,
and try again.
