8.26.2008Kirwan Makes His Way Back to Beloit

Brian Kirwan will rejoin the Snappers tonight after spending the last month and a half on the disabled list with a right shoulder/elbow injury. Kirwan will be in uniform in time for tonight’s game, as the Snappers take on the Kane County Cougars in game two of a four-game set at 7:00pm.

Prior to his injury, Brian was 4-4 with a 5.06 ERA in 13 appearances. Kirwan started 12 of those games totaling 64 innings and 30 strikeouts. The right-hander has allowed 77 hits and 36 earned runs during his time as a Snapper this year.

Brian was drafted by the Twins’ in the 11th round of the 2005 First-Year Player draft. He went 2-8 for the Snappers last year with a 5.30 ERA in 18 starts with 67 strikeouts and 37 walks. Kirwan is the lone returning starting pitcher from last year’s Western Division Championship club.

The move, effective today, puts Beloit’s active roster back at 24, one below the MWL maximum.

8.26.2008Revere Named Midwest League MVP and Top Prospect

Ben Revere has definitely received his fair share of awards this season and the speedy outfielder picked up two more honors on Tuesday. Revere was named by the 14 managers of the Midwest League as Most Valuable Player and as Prospect of the Year. Ben was also tabbed a starter on the MWL’s Postseason All-Star Team.

In last month’s issue of Baseball America, Ben was also named by the MWL Managers as best in the league in four different categories. The four categories include:

- Best Batting Prospect
- Best Strike Zone Judgment
- Fastest Baserunner
- Most Exciting Player

Revere also received honors earlier this year as Co-Topps Midwest League Player of the Month for the month of May along with Kane County’s Craig Italiano. Revere picked up the honors after hitting a league-best .433 with 11 doubles, five triples, one home run, 18 RBIs and 14 steals during that time span.

Revere currently leads the league in batting average (.379) and on-base percentage (.433), while also tied for second in stolen bases (44) and third in slugging percentage (.497). Ben also leads the Snappers in average, hits (129), doubles (17), triples (10), stolen bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Ben was drafted by the Twins in the 1st round (28th overall) of the 2007 First-Year Player draft. He spent the 2007 season as a member of the GCL Twins, where he hit .325 with 10 triples, 46 runs and 21 stolen bases.

8.25.2008Anderson Has Appendix Removed; Placed on DL

During the Snappers’ last road trip reliever Chris Anderson had to have an emergency appendectomy on Friday night. The procedure, that removed the left-hander’s appendix, will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

So far this season, Chris is 2-0 with a 6.84 ERA in 25 innings pitched. Used exclusively as a reliever, Anderson struck out 17 while walking just nine. Chris was also called upon to save two games for the Snappers.

Anderson was signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent on August 8th, 2007. A 2004 graduate of Portsmouth High School in New Hampshire, Chris was originally drafted by the Twins in the 18th round of the 2006 draft. However, he was not signed at the time due to an elbow injury.

The move leaves the Beloit active roster at 23, two below the MWL maximum.

8.17.2008Alexi Casilla to Join Snappers for Rehab Stint

Minnesota Twins' second baseman Alexi Casilla will be in uniform for the Snappers on Monday as they take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Casilla will join the Snappers for a short rehab assignment that could land him back with the big league club as early as Wednesday.

Alexi has been on the 15-day DL since July 29th with a torn ligament in his right thumb. The second baseman originally thought he was done for the year after injuring his thumb against the Chicago White Sox.

In 62 games this season, Alexi is hitting .313 with 15 doubles, four homers and 39 RBIs. Casilla is slugging .424 with just 25 strikeouts in 243 at-bats.

Along with Casilla joining the squad, the Snappers have placed infielder Paul Kelly back on the disabled list with a knee injury.

8.15.2008Revere Honored by MWL Managers in Latest Baseball America

The awards keep piling up for Beloit’s Ben Revere this season as he continues to excel in the Midwest League. In the most recent issue of Baseball America, Ben was named by the MWL Managers as best in the league in four different categories. The four categories include:

- Best Batting Prospect
- Best Strike Zone Judgment
- Fastest Baserunner
- Most Exciting Player

Revere currently leads the league in batting average (.380) and on-base percentage (.433), while also tied for second in stolen bases (41) and third in slugging percentage (.498). Ben also leads the Snappers in average, hits (122), doubles (17), triples (9), stolen bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Ben was drafted by the Twins in the 1st round (28th overall) of the 2007 First-Year Player draft. He spent the 2007 season as a member of the GCL Twins, where he hit .325 with 10 triples, 46 runs and 21 stolen bases.

Members of the 2007 Snappers were also mentioned in the article as best in the Florida State League in four different categories. The four former Snappers are:

- Anthony Slama (Best Reliever)
- Wilson Ramos (Best Defensive Catcher)
- Yancarlos Ortiz (Best Infield Arm)
- Jeff Smith (Best Manager Prospect)

(All rankings were compiled by the managers in their respective leagues)

8.3.2008Kelly Activated from DL

The Minnesota Twins have activated Paul Kelly from the disabled list in time for today’s game between the Snappers and Lansing Lugnuts. Kelly is coming off of a right hamstring injury sustained in the June 20th game against the Peoria Chiefs. Before he was injured, Paul played in just two games for the Snappers with four hits in six at-bats.

Kelly played for the Snappers during parts of the ’05 and ’06 season, making the Midwest League All-Star team in 2006. From there, the infielder battled a left knee injury that kept him out of the majority of the 2007 season, and the first half of the ’08 season.

Prior to this season, Kelly had a career batting average of .280 with 30 doubles and 73 RBIs in 142 minor league games. The Twins’ 2nd round pick in the 2005 First-Year Player draft is a graduate of Flower Mound (TX) High School.
