Hon Dr Jane Lomax-Smith BSc, MBBS, PhD, FRCPA is the Minister for Education, Minister for Mental Health and Substance Abuse, Minister for Tourism and the Minister for the City of Adelaide in South Australia.
Jane was elected as the Member for Adelaide in the South Australian Parliament on 9 February 2002, and became a Minister when Cabinet was formed the following month.
Jane has been Minister for Science and Information Economy, Minister for Employment, Training and Further Education, Minister for Small Business, and Lead Minister for the Bioscience Precinct Project. She was appointed Minister for Education and Children’s Services, and retained her portfolio as Minister for Tourism, in March 2004. Jane was appointed as a Member of the Executive Committee of the South Australian Cabinet in 2005.
In March 2006 she was re-elected as the State Member of Parliament for Adelaide and subsequently re-appointed as Minister for Education and Children’s Services and Minister for Tourism, and also appointed Minister for the City of Adelaide in this second term of the Rann Labor Government.
Jane has served in local government for three terms as an Adelaide City Councillor and was Lord Mayor of Adelaide for two terms.
Having worked as a clinical pathologist, medical researcher and teacher in London, Boston and Adelaide, Jane established her own pathology practice in South Australia.
Born in the East End of London, she is a strong advocate for social justice and sustainable development. Jane is married, has two children and lives in the City of Adelaide.
