About Mervyns

Mervyn's LLC, headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a family-friendly promotional neighborhood department store offering trend-right fashions and home décor for the entire family at affordable prices. Mervyns has a well-earned reputation for its extensive selection of national and private-label fashions and housewares. Mervyns delivers the right balance of style, quality and value for families. We do this by focusing our merchandise all in one convenient, easy to shop location so that it's just what you want in your closet and home, allowing you more time to get to what really matters to you: your family. Our goal is to satisfy our customers' expectations better than the competition by offering great assortments, great brands and excellent service — all at a good price.

Our Heritage

Our founder, Mervin G. Morris, knew he was on to something upon opening our first store in San Lorenzo, California in 1949. With only 2,800 square feet and two employees, this little family store was an instant success and today has been attributed to inventing the mid-range department store. In fact, Mervin Morris had achieved a number of firsts. Mervyns was the first to offer customers revolving credit, advertise sales in the newspaper and the first to focus on young families.

Mervyns operates 177 stores in 7 states, employing more than 20,000 associates. With approximately 10.5 million retail square feet overall, Mervyns stores have an average of 59,000 retail square feet — smaller than most other mid-tier retailers and easier to shop — and are located primarily in regional malls, community shopping centers and freestanding locations.

Mervyns caters to its core customer — a busy mother between the ages of 25-49, who shops for herself, her home and her family. In addition, with the growing Hispanic population, particularly in California and Texas, Mervyns recognizes one of its most loyal consumer groups with tailored initiatives.

Mervyns in the Community

With a 58-year-old tradition of being a good neighbor, we continue to support a number of initiatives and encourage our associates to volunteer in the communities throughout our 8-state region. Our mission is to improve the lives of children and families in our local communities, and we do that through the following activities:


Every year, each Mervyns store partners with non-profit organizations and school partners to provide participating underprivileged children with a $100 shopping spree and a 15% discount to purchase new clothes, shoes and accessories. Mervyns' associates are proud to volunteer at this annual event, which has helped thousands of kids go back to school with new clothes and the confidence they need to succeed. A company-wide tradition since 1992, Mervyns' award-winning ChildSpree program has donated more than $19 million and served more than 190,000 children.

Exclusive ChildSpree merchandise that gives back

Throughout the year, Mervyns sells limited-edition merchandise with 100% of the net profits benefiting Mervyns' award-winning ChildSpreeSM program, which provides shopping sprees for underprivileged children in local communities. By purchasing ChildSpree products for $5, Mervyns' customers can help outfit children in their local neighborhood and send them to school with a boost of self-confidence.


Walking to raise awareness about breast cancer or to find a solution for premature births, collecting gifts for deserving families during the holidays and conducting food and blood drives are just a few of the ways Mervyns' volunteers make a difference in our local communities. Mervyns' associates join together every year to make an impact by raising funds for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and March of Dimes' WalkAmerica.

Mervyns' volunteers are generous with their time and enjoy making a difference in their schools, libraries and communities. Through Mervyns' Workplace Giving Campaign, associates have an opportunity to make personal donations to their selected non-profit organization, such as the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes and United Way.
