The independent music industry has scored well in the annual Nationwide Mercury Prize nominations, with seven of the twelve records nominated being released through British independent labels.

There were few surprises in the list, as major independent acts such as The Last Shadow Puppets, Radiohead and Adele scored nominations, but there was an element of surprise in the nomination for Portico Quartet’s Knee-deep in the North Sea, predicted for nomination by Bearded Editor Gareth Main in his blog on the subject yesterday.

Speaking after the announcement, Main said: “It is great news for the independent industry to have over half of the nominations for this prestigious award come from independent labels.

“The independent music industry is one of the most forward-thinking, innovative industries in the world and a nomination for Radiohead’s In Rainbows, with its innovative distribution model, just goes to show that the panel have acknowledged this.”

Asked about his thoughts on who would win he was more coy: “I’m going for Portico Quartet. I’m sure they will have long odds with the bookies so I might slip a cheeky tenner on them, they certainly deserve it. If I was a sensible betting man, I’d go for Domino to make it four out of the last six awards.”

The full list is:

Rachel Unthank and the Winterset - The Bairns (EMI)
Estelle - Shine (Atlantic)
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid (Polydor)
Portico Quartet - Knee-deep in the North Sea (Babel)
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement (Domino)
Burial - Untrue (Hyperdub)
Adele - 19 (XL)
Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim (EMI)
British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music? (Rough Trade)
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss - Raising Sand (Decca)
