Welcome to t's Breaking the Vicious Cycle WebSite

Welcome to t's Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) website.

I am deeply saddened to inform visitors to this site that Elaine Gottschall, author of Breaking the Vicious Cycle, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2005. We have lost a true heroine. Elaine was one of those rare individuals who, having found her way through her own personal crisis in the form of her young daughter's Ulcerative Colitis, feels compelled to help those who are still suffering. The journey from illness to health that she and her family took was long and fraught with uncertainty. But at the end of that journey she turned back, retraced and mapped the route, so that others could follow in her path. In the process, she faced ridicule from the medical community and had to fight to be taken seriously. Elaine stood up to them, and in doing so, stood up for all of us who will ever suffer from IBD, IBS, Celiac, ASD's, and the myriad other complications that arise from gut issues.

There are few individuals from whom I have learned so much or who have had such a profound effect on my life - not only that her work literally saved my life and gave me back control over my illness... not only her patiently teaching me SCD and the science underlying it, and inspiring and encouraging me to keep learning and to share what I learned.... but also in teaching me about tenacity, compassion, and resilience. I will forever be thankful to Elaine for having the curiosity and drive to find out why her daughter was helped by the diet, and the courage and conviction to spread the word to those of us in need.

So, again... Welcome to t's Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) website - or rather, welcome back. The site was down for a while, and it would have remained down were it not for the many requests I've received to put it back up... so here it is. Please note, there've been some changes, so this is a reincarnation of sorts. As with all reincarnations, the spirit remains the same, but the body's a new one in some respects. As such, it might be helpful for visitors, new and repeat alike, to read this introductory page, rather than just clicking through.

The first change to note is the name of the site - t's Specific Carbohydrate Diet Website. This time around, the site is mine and mine alone, and is solely my responsibility. If you want the Official Specific Carbohydrate Diet Website for Elaine Gottschall's book, "Breaking the Vicious Cycle", you'll have to visit Iain has built and manages the official site and does a brilliant job. You'll find links to his site at the bottom of every page of my site.

Please note that all the content you'll find related to the diet here is 100% strictly SCD, and is posted on the site at my sole discretion. I'm 'old school' when it comes to the diet and take the admonition to adhere "fanatically" to the diet at face value - for reasons which will become clear if you take the time to read my biography. For those of you struggling with whether or not to make the commitment to the diet, I urge you to read my story because the diet worked for me and ultimately saved my life... but it only worked for me because I followed it strictly, and this is the only way it will work for you.

And that brings me to the other reason I decided to put the site back up... The site was originally conceived by Rachel Turet (founder of the Long Island Listserv) and I as a place where SCDers could go to find correct and accurate information on the diet, from people who knew the diet inside and out, and who had succeeded in healing themselves using it. At the same time, there was a great deal of misinformation creeping into the network of SCD information sites that were popping up, and this misinformation was making people who should have succeeding on the diet, sick. Some of it was honest mistakes, some was laziness, and some was the result of individuals wanting to profit from the diet whether what they peddled was SCD compliant or not. For me, the idea of profiting from the diet is anathema... the diet is about taking control of your own healing by eating healthy food, and the only outlay of cash required is what you spend to purchased your copy of "Breaking the Vicious Cycle". Rest assured, what you find here won't hurt you. This is a completely non-profit site, and for me, peoples' health, wellbeing, and healing are paramount.

That said, this would be a good time to talk about the book and the diet. In all probability, you have come to this site looking for answers to some form of bowel disease, including indigestion, a "nervous stomach", chronic diarrhea or spastic colon, to the more serious and debilitating problems such as Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's disease, Diverticulitis, Celiac and Cystic Fibrosis. This web site is devoted to bringing information to light regarding the use of diet to overcome the affects and symptoms associated with these illnesses.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet as outlined in "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" by Elaine Gottschall B.A.,M.Sc. has been proven in thousands of instances, by countless testimonies, to provide relief for a multitude that seeks an adjunct therapy to the one provided to them by the medical establishment.

Simply put, the premise of this diet is that a nourishing, healthy, natural diet, minus grains, sugar and preservatives (see book for specifics), can, and when followed precisely, often does restore a healthy digestive system. It is an effective and harmless, nutritional road to recovery.

The new site is still under construction, but much of the information from my old site is included. There is a 'Getting Started' section which includes yogurt making instructions, my redux of the science underlying the diet, as well as information on keeping a food journal. I include the information on the science behind the diet for those who have not yet read "Breaking the Vicious Cycle". My hope is that it will provide you with an understanding of how the diet works and perhaps help you to decide if the diet is for you.

The 'FAQ' section is as it was on the old site. The information found there comes from discussions on the Long Island Listserv, my own research, and correspondence with the author and other long-time SCDers. It is by no means complete, in that I have a great deal more information to go through, edit, and post, but as I do, I will be marking updated information as 'new'.

I am also including the 'Associated Conditions' section from the old site, and will be completing it as time allows. This is the only place you will find information that is not strictly SCD. Instead, you will find information on some of the 'constellation' of immune-related conditions that often accompany Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, as well as information on treatments, and links to articles. The information included in this section is in no way meant to replace medical treatment from an appropriately trained professional. Nor is it for the purposes of self-diagnoses. Instead, it is included for those who may be newly diagnosed and find themselves overwhelmed, frightened, and perhaps panicked (a place I and many others I know have been). My intention is to give you a place to start learning about the challenges you face by offering information, in the hopes that it will allow you to take a breath, ground yourself, and perhaps even get a good night's sleep. At the very least, it may help to know that you are not alone...

... which leads to the 'Links' section. Here you will find links to various other SCD related sites. These include information sites, recipe sites, sites with editorials, one commercial site where SCD compliant products can be found, and foreign language sites. Also included are links to information about some of the SCD discussion groups you can join, and where you can have questions about the diet reliably answered by experienced SCDers.

Finally, I'll be including my biography (forthcoming), wherein I'll discuss how I came to SCD and what it's done for me, my Crohn's and other health issues, as well as tackling the necessity of following the diet strictly, as viewed through the lens of my own experiences. Also included will be links to posts on my own personal site; a more appropriate venue for my own editorializing.

What I will not be including anywhere on this site is a contact address. All that I have to offer with regard to the diet will be posted here, and after a great deal of soul-searching, this is where I've decided to devote my energy. As mentioned above, there are ample SCD discussion groups available for those who have questions, and the wealth of knowledge and experience represented by the senior members of those groups should hold you in good stead.

So... Welcome to t's Specific Carbohydrate Diet website. I wish you Good Health!

CAUTION: The information provided on this web site is in no way meant to conflict with prescribed medical treatment! Do not, under any circumstance, use the Specific Carbohydrate diet in place of medicines prescribed by your doctor!
