56 Slovak Athletes to Compete in Beijing Summer Olympic Games

Bratislava, July 20 (TASR-SLOVAKIA) - The Slovak nominations for the XXIX Beijing Olympic Games 2008 are complete and feature 56 Slovak athletes participating August 8-24, 2008 in China.

Head of the Slovak Olympics Commitee Frantisek Chmelar says that this is the smallest Slovak delegation leaving for a Summer Olympic Games so far. He cites a total lack of results in team sports, but he believes Slovaks will bring home as many as six medals.

The Slovak delegations in Athens 2004 featured 65 athletes, in Sydney 2000 it was 112, and in Atlanta 1996 - the first Summer Olympics for Slovakia - there were 71 athletes.

Vice-president of the Slovak Olympic Commitee Vladimir Miller is satisfied with the number of athletes. His deputy, Roman Bucek, is set to leave for Beijing on Tuesday, June 22.

The flag bearer at the opening ceremony will be Elena Kaliska, the only female Olympic champion in the history of Slovakia, winning a golden medal in whitewater canoeing in Athens 2004. A vow before Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic will be made by tennis player Dominik Hrbaty and artistic gymnast Ivana Kovacova on Thursday, July 24 at 2 p.m. in Bratislava.
